Aqua Hot heating system & overall advice 2009 Monaco

Looking at a 2009 Monaco Dynasty 50k miles that has this system I’m very unfamiliar with. Opening one of the cargo doors there is a clear plastic tank and during my inspection it was not full which upset me as I told him I wanted everything full and operating when I arrived.

And this salesman is the type that, you know, the typical salesman that you can just tell once you buy it he’s not going to give you the time of day and answers questions and says things that are just totally wrong and he tries to ******** his way through everything.

He’s the worst type in short and just says **** that’s not true and you know it’s not true, in fact he appears to be very unfamiliar with how a class A even works. I am a first time buyer and I don’t know diddly squat about them and I knew much more than he did just by my research, being very mechanical and using common sense.

Example: The 4 house batteries were these huge gray very tall 6 V. He said all the batteries were fine and havd just been changed this year. So I open the compartment and on top of these 4 gigantic batteries is a small 12 V car battery wired in!!! LMAO. So basically the batteries are all shot and everything was running off this one car battery for the demo!!!! Needless to say he will be installing new ones.

But the story is not over as he said don’t worry about the engine batteries they are definitely brand new. He points to a label on top of the battery that said something like SJ18 and below it another number. He says see they are 2018. Now what gets me about this guy is I don’t really think he’s that stupid I just think he’s trying to prey upon my ignorance when I told him I’ve never owned one before!!! I quickly pointed out that that is not a date code and that’s a model number and if you look closely there is a date code on the other side but they never punched out the numbers so who the hell knows. I’ll be getting those two new as well!

Now with all that said, that I don’t trust the guy and I don’t feel comfortable with him, I still love this coach but you can tell it’s been worn. This dealer is just lazy like the outside was washed but it’s far from clean and it definitely needs a wax job because it just doesn’t shine like the other used ones I have seen. They did a quick wash and let it go at that. But I’m telling you all of this because of what he told me next about the Aqua Hot system and setting the groundwork for why I question him!

On the side of this tank there are two little tiny Phillips screws that stick out facing the door and there are small little rust marks running all the way down the tank from them. If I’m not mistaken there’s two or maybe three streaks coming from the now rusted screws. I don’t even understand to be honest why there are screws in the plastic tank or what the purpose of them are and I didn’t take a picture or spend a lot of time on it initially but now that I’m 99% getting ready to get it I am wondering if that indicates a real big problem? I wish I had studied it more but it was one of 100 things l glanced at at and made note to write on their list.

Being a plumber it looks like a small drizzle and nothing major at all and probably just small drops coming out of it over the years and I’m sure the easy fix is to unscrew the screw and put a rubber washer around it and screw it back in or an O ring or even silicone. And he said it’s not an issue at all to worry about. Which means nothing to me.

But I’m hoping maybe somebody can verify as I don’t want to get down the road in two months later find out I need a new tank at my cost. This is in a small city in Piedmont South Carolina about 30 minutes from Spartanburg or Greenville but there is nobody that’s local that I can get to go out there and do an inspection for me I’ve already tried.

Those are those things I’ve always been curious about because everybody everywhere always says get somebody to inspect it but in reality just how the hell does that play out? It’s not like they’ve got this guy sitting around waiting to drop what he’s doing and drive out to do a mobile inspection for you!! And even then you need 2 different people, a mechanic for the driving part and then RV guy for the house part and the slides. So it may be GREAT advice no doubt, but I just don’t see that actually happening in the vast majority of the cases.

I really feel helpless as I’m very mechanical and I was able to spot a lot of things but when it comes down to it I’m bullshitting my way through this and I would feel so much more comfortable having somebody who knows what the hell they’re doing look at the unit especially since I just don’t trust this salesman and he is the type they could be dumping something on me and would have no conscious about it the next night.

I’ve dealt with and been looking at a lot of dealers over the last six months and a couple I have felt really good about and I knew they had ethics and a couple I had so so feelings about, but this guy is the absolute worst in my opinion and the A typical salesman.

That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with this coach and it could very well be in tiptop fantastic shape. All I’m saying is if it isn’t, I sure wouldn’t trust this guy to tell me about it! And you can tell he has no intention of spending too much on it.

So anything anybody can add about this Aqua heating system which handles the hot water as well as heat for the unit??? I think??? I would be very thankful :) as well as any other items I should be careful and look at as well!

Here is the link for the unit

I can’t really do RV trader or let’s say I can’t do individuals because I am financing through Ally and they only deal with dealers. Yes DougRainer that’s all true. But... so is the flipside. Other words, just because he’s a crappy salesman doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a crappy coach. One doesn’t necessarily equate to the other.

This problem here is this guy is going to be like that on EVERY single RV he sells, the good, the bad and the ugly! That’s just his personality and because he such a universal shithead there’s no way to actually be sure that it means anything other than he’s just a crappy shithead lol.

He’s just going to make minor of everything so he can sell it and get it out the door. But I’m fairly good at making sure things are going to be in writing. He tried to scam me earlier when we wrote a list of everything that was wrong and then I said once we get it fully powered up and functioning I need to spend the night in it and I want to make sure you’re going to cover anything that’s wrong with it right?

And he pulls up the list and says “yes sir, anything on this list will be covered” I knew right then what he was trying to do and I said NO, not just what’s on that list, but absolutely anything at all that’s non-functioning!

My point is he just simply cannot be trusted and the truth is, in about 30 minutes I will find out the answer because they are running the application as we speak, and if approved, there’s a very good chance I’m just going to request a new salesman because I just don’t like this guy. I see it in his eyes, I see it in his mannerisms, I see right through his fake smile and his fake acting “genuineness”.

But if that’s not a possibility because they are fairly small and he’s all I got, you can bet your ass that every single thing will be in writing before I sign anywhere and I will spend an entire night in the unit as well!
  • Be sure to fire up that AH unit to be sure it's functioning properly. There should be no screws attached to the external fluid reservoir. In that model coach the AH will provide domestic hot water, heat for the house and a heating loop for the motor so make sure all those loops are functioning properly. Hopefully there is a manual for the AH you can refer to to gauge the operation. If any leaks appear run away from this sale.

Make sure the AquaHot system works. When was last time it was serviced?
I just serviced mine. Pulled burner, cleaned it, changed nozzle and installed new filter. I'll go out and check my tank for those screws but I don't believe they are there.

No screws in my plastic tank

Thanks very much for checking. The screws didn’t seem to be attaching anything and I thought maybe there was something inside the tank that they were holding, but I’m now starting to think that a pinhole formed and somebody drove a screw in it to stop it from leaking!!! Or the previous owner screwed something onto the tank, who knows what but removed it and had to put the screws back in to plug the holes!!!

Ya know, It didn’t really hit me until this very moment as to why it looked so out of place but subconsciously it seemed ”off”. But now I know that’s the reason, as I never saw anything attached to the screws and so they had no purpose being there to begin with but it didn’t hit me at the time . Which is why I guess my subconscious mind flagged it!

The tires are all new 2016 Goodyear’s with great tread

My other issue would be those goodyears. They are under investigation for their rv tires and lying about specs and blowouts with them. I think I would pass on that coach and look for another. Especially when they can't even replace batteries for a demo and slap one in.

  • A common practice to plug holes in tanks is exactly what you saw. Drill out a small pin hole to make it clean, then plug it with a screw with a rubber washer or a bit of putty. In metal tanks, this works pretty good if the tank is stationary. A plastic tank that has flexing and movement, it's only a matter of time till it starts leaking again.

You said the tank was not full of water. Was the water above the screw or below them? If below, they probably still leak and the dealer is hiding that fact. Either way, you are probably looking at getting a new tank. I would not trust that one. INSIST they fill the tank all the way and put the system under a full load. If you are going to fork over $179,999 that's the least they can do for you.

Follow your gut. If you think the salesman is lying to you, he probably is. Its quite obvious he lied to you (or didn't know) about the batteries. You can't trust anything he says. Going forward, examine the coach on your own, without his commentary (and excuses). Then simply state what you want changed, fixed, or altered before you even consider buying. That's a LOT of money! That's more than my house cost!

Absolutely insist all tanks are full, and test all systems now! I have a feeling though, once you drive off the lot, you are on your own. You won't be getting support from these folks.

IRV2.com has a forum category specific for Monico. Maybe you can poke around there too:

  • Not too many nice things being said on the interweb about Karolina Koaches. A quick look at RVTrader shows 114 Dynastys for sale and about a dozen in that year range. With that kind of service before they get your money, you'll be on your own after the sale.

    I'd just walk.

  • If you have that feeling about this salesman then definitely don't expect anything to be done after the sale. And be sure to verify that everything he said will be done is actually done correctly and to your satisfaction. If you're determined to buy this one then an independant inspection could save you $$$$.
    Good luck!
