I have a manual awning. What I do is take a couple long velcro tie wraps and put them around the arms and secure them up as high as I can reach. Perfect? No, but unless the spring breaks or the latch wind/unwind latch gets knocked out of position I am unlikely to see the awning open up like a spinnaker.
If I had an electric awning, I think I would take the advice above and put in a positive disconnect.
