Awning strap disappeared

I was closing my awning and having a hard time getting it to retract. I gave it a good shove and it started to go - but I didn't have time to grab the awning pull strap and now it's buried in the awning

My gut tells me to just release the locking level and try to bring it down using the arms - but I don't want to break anything.

I have no idea what kind of awning it is - manual, 2 arms that lock into place. That's about it.

Advice would be appreciated :-)

  • This happened to me once when out all alone in the woods- my solution may work for you (assuming you have a nice long piece of rope):

Attach each end of the rope to the top of the arms where they meet the roller, making sure there's enough slack in between for you to pull on the center. Now you've made a substitute "strap".

Unlatch the awning, and position yourself in the middle of the rope. Pull down as usual.
  • That happened to me. I was able to pull on the arms to get the awning out. I then tied a 1 ft. piece of string to the loop so I have something to grab.
  • just do what you stated!
Unlock & bring both arms out & go to the middle of the awning , start unrolling by hand.
    The strap should show up!
    Good Luck & Drive Safe,
  • Hope it is not a 2 Step Awning. They are a real PITA.
Yes release the locking latch on each end. Plus the lock on the awning.
Get someone to go on roof and push awning out.
Two more people on each arm. BE VERY CAREFUL HERE.SHOULD AWNING RETRACT YOU COULD LOOSE OR DAMAGE YOUR FINGER IF YOU TRY TO GRAB IT.

Had this problem once. I make sure I have awning rod on the srap before retracing now.

The old style waning is much easier to do.
  • I'd get something to release that locking lever (the one you change for it to go up or down), set it to down, and get somebody on each arm to pull it down.
