Back up Camera monitor

It looks like out 99' Harney Renegade pusher came with a back up camera. But it also looks like the previous owner removed the tv above the driver. The best I can tell, that TV was used as the monitor for the camera. I could really use the camera, and for that matter some entertainment.

Can someone school me on these? There looks to be two coax cables coming into the monitor area. There is a tv in the rear as well. Any suggestions for monitors/flat screens? Is the camera really monitored over the tv? I can hardly believe that, but the framing for the big old tv is gone. So maybe they had the monitor mounted at the bottom of that framing?

You can also buy a smaller flip down screen 12 volt monitor just for the rear view camera. These are usually available for less than $100 and are easier to wire in to your chassis 12 volt system. Flip down monitor

That is an option as well. I am using 115V monitors as this point, as the outlet is powered by the inverter. So that is kind of slick.

  • Well, I tested some things, and the camera is operational! I need to mount the flat screen, which is going to take some carpentry. And mount the 110V outlet which isn't a biggie. I will have two inputs for the tv....the camera and the dvd player. So I think I am going to need an rca switch. Unfortunately the tv only has one set up rca inputs.
Then I need to figure out how to watch from the rear tv, as it only uses coax. So I need to convert rca signal to coax, and use a splitter to feed both TV's. Probably would be best eventually to replace the old tv in back as well with one that incorporates a dvd player so it is independent of the front.

    Thank you!

What you may run into is that the camera has a power switch also that was tied to the TV to come on when the TV turned on. Check to see if there is a power cable running to the camera or if it was fed power through the coax.

  • Some TV's were used exactly that way. Some of the Safari coaches actually switched automatically to the back up camera when the coach was put in reverse. They were not set up to monitor the rear camera all of the time when driving down the road but when you got somewhere where you were going to back up, the TV would come on and you had a large view of what the camera was seeing while you backed up.
You should be able to take the one coax from the camera and plug that in to any 12 volt monitor that can flip down from underneath a cabinet or where ever you want to mount it.
