backsplash in kitchen

I want to jazz up the walls in our kitchenette area, behind the sink/under the cabinets. Probably 8-10 square feet total because there is a window in there. Is it okay to just stick on something right over the existing wall panels? I found these mosaic adhesive tile-like backsplash squares by Smart Tiles at Home Depot. Designed for kitchen/bath areas, and not made from ceramic so not heavy, with just a peel 'n stick application. Any one use them before? Or recommend something else?

  • If their being stuck to wood not the wall paper but wood they should hold up to road vibrations for a few years.
  • Suggest you clean the walls really well for any residual grease and debris that may have been left from cooking if you use the adhesive backed kind.
  • You should also be aware that should you want or need to remove them later you will likely ruin the underlying wall finish.
  • Jill, look at Self Adhesive Kitchen Tile 2013 in the Do It Yourself Modifications Forum. You will find lots of info on these tiles. I just order some for our RV.
  • We originally had a mirror that was glued to the wallpaper (actually vinyl wall covering) as a backsplash over the stove and replaced it with ceramic tile. The mirror came off without too much problem, but removing the vinyl covering was pretty difficult. Since we were installing ceramic tile attempting to adhere it to vinyl didn't seem to be a good idea so we worked it down to the wall surface (plywood). However, if you plan on covering it with a peel and stick product and the existing wall covering is solid, I would try just sticking to the existing surface first. It will probably hold up well and if it doesn't, then I would look into removing the wall covering. Good luck.
