Ball joints?

So my 1993 class a p30 chassis needs constant front end work. Right now on the to do list is upper and lower ball joints. Should i spring for the super expensive ball joints off supersteer? Or will those just be toast in a year like the moogs? (And every other brand). Just looking for some feedback before i spend 400 on parts that normally cost 70 bucks.
  • I only do a few thousand miles a year but i live on long island so im constantly going over the bridges to get in and out of this overcrowded hell hole. The roads to leave this island are BRUTAL. unavoidable pot holes and the coach is just getting thrashed for the first hour of every trip. Its violent driving thru this area sometimes.

Anyway, i bought this rv about 2 years ago, it had some front end clonking that i sucessfully ignored for the first trip. After that. My mechanic realized someone put the wrong balljoints in and they were hitting the control arms over bumps when the suspension would compress. He did new ball joints at that time. Maybe the old ones were the non rv balljoints mentioned?

Fast forward to today and the balljoints are a sloppy mess once again. So i guess they lasted more like 18 months. The drag link and tie rods arent great either. But i dont know the age of those. The truck actually drives pretty well with the worn out parts but i dont want to let the front end go to total garbage. Its probably a good idea to nip these problems in the butt before they cause drivability issues.

Fast forward to today, and the ball joints have slack again.

If I remember right, there were TWO different ball joints that were listed for the P30 chassis. Both would fit even tho one type was a little smaller and would wear out quickly. Compare the two ball joints and use the ones that are the beefiest and they should last a long time, with reasonable care.
I believe the one type of ball joints was listed for trucks and the other ones were listed as RV specific. Hopefully someone else will chime in and clarify this discrepancy.

X2 and if you use the wrong ones they will fail fairly quick.
I use to have the correct part #s I will look to see if I can find.
  • The problem with ball joints today is they are made to fail. Modern ball joints use hard plastic knuckles inside with very little lubricant so they fail in short order.

I'd be installing high quality ball joints (not Moog either) that you can grease and grease them often. I install my own. Not hard to do and so long as you don't disturb the caster / camber shims, your alignment will remain unchanged. I run the Super U brand and they get greased everytime I change the oil.

Being old school, I prefer kingpins but today, the only vehicles that have them are big trucks.
  • If the ball joints only last a year something else is wrong in the front end. How many miles do you drive in a year? I'd find a different shop.
