Basement rollout trays

Hello everyone....I am considering removing the rollout trays in the basement storage of our coach so i can then build some storage units myself. I know the trays are nice in some ways but I would rather use the space better. I have one full tray and two half trays....has anyone else done this and then regretted loosing the convenience? Do you have any pictures of what you replaced the rollouts with?
Thanks much,
Phil

  • We have had RV's with and without. I would rather quit RVing that not have slide out trays. Both of ours are in bays that are under tip outs. I hit my head on those tip outs enough to probably cause brain damage! (no comment) If the compartment is not under a tip out, that would be fine. However, if a tip out is above it, I have to have the slide out trays. Not one issue at all ~ work perfectly ~ and save my head and back.
  • I've done it both ways, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. I think the best way is to have two slide that meet in the middle in a 60/40 arrangement so that the slide on each side of the coach never goes out the other way. Then you can use full height outside the frame rails and keep lower stuff in the center.
  • Huh! And here I was thinking about having a couple installed. Are they really a problem?

Take them out and sell them. I have one, it's a PITA. You lose vertical storage space and, if an item on the other side is a bit too high, it falls off when pulling the tray toward you. In my other full width slide (without the tray), I have a four foot stick, like an old broom handle, with a nail bent to 90* in the end that can reach all the 'stuff' in the middle.
  • Ours had one under the driver's side slide. I took it out and don't miss it at all. Between the lost height and width taken up by the drawer I have way more room now. I only use that space for carrying a spare 35x13.5x15 Krawler (105 lb tire wheel combo) for my Jeep, and a MIG welder, not anything I need on a regular basis.

While I'm still young enough to crawl in there it will stay out, it's up in the overhead of the barn for that day I can't bend that well anymore.
  • I wouldn't take mine out for nothing-----if something is loaded in the back and you need it how do you get it??? Unload everything in front of it. Some thing I have got used to after having this thing for 15 years. Sliding trays, lights in every compartment, Frig/freezer in the basement, lots of little things its hard to find now days.
  • Not what you're looking for . . . I replaced a homebuilt with a commercial slide out. The homebuilt had no real locking mechanism and actually started to slide out while we were in motion.

I'm sure you can make a DIY slide out tray, just make sure you can lock the thing.
