my wife tells me when she's headed to the back and i acknowledge that its a good time or not & i try to drive significantly smoother while she's up.

I have a small mirror (that i picked up somewhere) - the type that would be used to watch a baby in the back seat of a car....its suction cupped on the windshield and allows me to see whats going on in the back.

if i see a bump or some issue i coming up i let my wife and kids know w/ a good YELL "BUMP" or "SIT DOWN". everyone understands its wise to steady yourself or even lightly keep a hand on something to steady yourself (no different then if you were walking down the isle of an airliner in flight or a bus in motion).

Common sense must prevail.

My 78 year old F-I-L has used our restroom several times while under way. He asks me if is a good time to get up and I will either say yes or hold it for a few minutes. If I yell "HOLD ON" it means literally HOLD ON to something with both hands right now or drop into a seat!! I've only used that 2 times.

Wife has cooked, cleaned, vacuumed, made lunch, made dinner (no burners, microwave only), napped, watched TV, and used the restroom while I'm driving. That's exactly why we got it!!

Just use some common sense and make sure everyone knows the rules.

I can tell you back in the 70's my parents had a Class C and when we'd go on vacations we were able to drive non-stop except when we had to stop for fuel. We accomplished this because my dad and I would do hot-swaps for the drivers seat every couple of hours. We would set the cruise control and swap out the drivers seat while going 60 mph down the freeway.

I remember that story going around back in the 70's! So I would call it an Internet myth, but it pre-dates the Internet. While I don't doubt there have been people who have set the cruise control and got up and walked around and crashed, I would seriously doubt anybody sued and won over it.

As my DH gets older, bathroom breaks have to occur more often. Because I drive, he goes and uses the rest room while we are going down the road. Yes, there is a chance something will happen but he does it quickly as he can.

I think most of us just wanted to let them know to be extra careful. The the urgency that the OP'ers wife has, I'm sure she'll make it back there lickidy-split at lightening speed probably hovering over the floor with her feet barely touching the tile. (been there, done that) LOL!

Effy, I think the point was that it's different if you are in the 30's-40's vs. being in your upper 60's-70's and even 80's. Balance is not as good when we get older (I'm 56). Since I had a spinal cord injury in late 2009, my balance is NOT the same, but I'm 98% back to my original self.

I'm sure the OP could manage the bathroom perfectly while going down the road but they are not used to doing that, they have a 5th wheel. I think most of us just wanted to let them know to be extra careful.
