Best way to keep chassis battery charged over winter?

We have a 2014 Itasca Navion which has a Progressive PD 9245 converter/charger which has the built in "Charge Wizard" to keep the coach batteries charged.

I don't understand why they don't hook up the chassis battery so it will charge along with the coach batteries.

I could simply hook up my "Battery Tender" to the chassis battery, but I'm wondering if any of you guys have modified your wiring to allow the onboard charger to charge all the batteries?

Suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you
  • The battery types are very different. Chassis is a starting battery, house is deep cycle. A single charger would treat them the same.

Given the cost of batteries, a separate float (not trickle) charger is a good investment.

I connect mine to the dash lighter outlet and power it from the nearest 120 receptacle connected to the shore line.
  • There is a device that will monitor the chassis and coach batteries. If it finds the coach battery is above 13 volts and the chassis battery falls below 12.6 (or so) then it will energize a wire going to the chassis to coach battery relay. This allows automatic chassis battery charging.

I would just use the battery tender, and might even remove the clips and hook it up all the time to 120 volts in the basement, with the wires extending to the battery with #14 wire and a 10 amp fuse at both ends.
