Best Wireless Back up Camera

Would like to install a wireless back up camera on my new to me 31' Class C. I will be towing my boat most places and when not towing my boat, will towing my 2012 Scion xB on a dolly.

Looking for input/advice/suggestions on...

1. Screen size
2. Backlit display types
3. Quality of Bluetooth signal
4. Quality of mounting hardware
5. Mounting options (screwing into RV vs industrial double stick tape for mounting on exterior

6. Any other input/advice

Thanks!

Check it to see if in horizontal position you have no blocked areas. I would also make sure that the power cable is firmly attached, so in case the camera comes off it is still attached.

Hard to say without being there.
Since running the wire seems to be a major concern, then maybe right under the light would be best.....for you.
But you have a good point about weather protection.
    Your call.
  • Thinking about this rear view camera (see link). I've read the CCD cameras are preferred for better image quality over the CMOS cameras that are used by Garmin and many others.

    Rear View Safety Wireless Camera

I think for ease of installation, the wireless would be easier. They also a wired version but it requires running a cable from camera to monitor on dash.

One think that will also be a challenge is where to mount the 7" monitor! It does come with a suction cup mount so the windshield is probably where I will place it.
  • I recently installed the camera Baja Man linked above. I installed it in place of the center rear running light, because I wanted to limit the holes in my fiberglass body. My rv is 27.5' and reception is excellent. a very expensive camera, but I like the audio option and the cig lighter plug. It is also heavy at 1lb of bouncing mass 3" away from the rv body, which led me to worry about mounting solidly without risking cracking my fiberglass.

I used 1x4 pvc board to mount the camera to, then secured it to the rv. On the inside of the rv shell I have another piece of 1x4 pvcp. So it's a sandwich of pvc board either side of the fiberglass. I used bolts(4) and jb weld to secure camera to pvc. And then longer bolts(2 more) to hold it altogether with proflex also securing it on the outside.

3rd edit. Sorry Baja Man I didn't absorb your post very well. If you are considering that camera, I would highly recommend it. Clarity in video and audio is very good. I haven't used it at night yet, so I can't comment on that. I stick it my to the windshield when traveling and stash it behind the drivers seat when not. I thought they sent me a wrong antenna and contacted them, they responded twice (2 different people) with in a day on the weekend. But I finished unpacking and found that they give you 3 antenna, 2 hard plastic with the elbow and one metal one on a 6' wire. I use the 2 hard plastic ones and from the moment I hooked it up it has been excellent. as I said above I think it is pricey, but you get what you pay for in this instance.
  • Great to hear that wireless is workg well.

I decide to to go with wired version by same maker... Rear View Safety. I purchase the one sold at Costco. I went with wired version as I want to ensure high quality pic and eliminate connection issues that can happen with wireless signals and interference.
  • My camera arrived!

Now I need to plan the install. #1 BIG TASK......where to run cable from camera to dash.

    Thoughts:

Drill a hole under center clearance lamp. Mount camera above hole and run camera cable into hole using a rubber grommet around hole to seal cable entry.

I will look to see if cable can be run behind fiberglass rear section wall into bedroom and then down through floor. Once below floor and under chassis, I can run forward to dash area.

    Thoughts? Ideas? Opinions?
  • Update....

Running wire from camera to bottom of RV is a task that I;m not sure I want to do. For a clean install, I would have to remove the fiberglass caps on the rear of my RV to run wires behind them. This would mean removing caps, removall all caulking, in stalling cable, reinstalling caps and recaulking all seams/edges.

Not sure I want to go through all of this.

I am now leaning towards the wireless version by same manufacturer, Rear View Safety. The retrun to Costco is easy. However, the purchase of a wireless version (not sold by Costco) would have to be directly from manufacturer, as it is not sold by Costco.....with less of a warranty compared to Costco, as well as hassles of returning if needed.

I read here that MacZulu has had good luck with his wireless version.

Any other want to share their experiences with the wireless version by Rear View Safety?

    Thanks
  • Bit the bullet and kept the wired version of the Rear View Safety camera.

After much analysis, trial and error, special tools, custom tool fabrication...I was able to lead camera cable from camera to below chassis! This will probably be the most difficult part he install process.

Now, 2nd part will be to run cable from rear of chassis to dash.

Pics show part 1 which was to run cable from camera location to bottom of bumper

  • I'm trying to decide which camera system to purchase right now, myself. It's a tough decision! I see some that look fine and have high ratings, but then they don't come with a monitor. There's on in particular that's very inexpensive and highly rated that simply attaches behind the license plate (camera fixed above, not in line with the bracket) so nothing gets obscured. But then, what monitor to buy??
  • For an RV that will be towing, you ant the camera up high so you can monitor the vehicle/boat/trailer that is being towed. I chose the Rear View Safety for its reputation and customer service. And because it is sold at Costo (XLNT return policy), the decision was easy.

I am glad that I stuck with the wired version, as the screen resolution and no connection issues should make it XLNT!
