Yes you will feel some difference at a safe distance but extemely small MPG effect.

Have you tried it? It makes a huge difference in our current C and the B+ before that. You don't have to have your nose up the bumper of the big rig either. Obviously the closer the more effect, but it's not safe to get up close. But even at several car lengths, it has a big effect.
I'm not going to argue with anyone about the practice; I'm just reporting that it does indeed make a considerable difference. What anyone does with the info is up to them.
