Blade Seal

Thetford toilet and the water leaks down pretty quickly. I am thinking it’s the blade seal and I guess that means removing the toilet to do the job.

If thats the case, I am tempted to pay someone to do it. Aside from the obvious unpleasant odor etc, is the job that tough?

  • My seal is fine, but I spray Silicone on it occasionally to keep the rubber soft. I shut the water off, clear the toilet of standing water, spray it and let it set for a bit. Not sure if it works on the toilet, but by slides seem good when I use it there.
  • Futzing has proven more than once to solve problems. I highly recommend it.
  • Interesting development. After watching the videos I went back out and futzed with the toilet a bit and now it’s holding water just fine. I think the bowl was misaligned from the base.
  • When ours starts not holding water, we usually have to clean mineral and lime deposits off the seal, and then it works fine. Ours is 19 yrs old and still doing good. We use some Lime Away in a little water and let it sit there for about half hour, then use a toilet brush on the seal. Rinse toilet, put a little water back in and good to go.
  • I have two toilets and both have been holding water fine for the past 14 years.

I keep water in the bowl all the time which keeps the seal from drying out.

I also clean them with Dawn dish soap at the end of every trip by pouring the dish soap in the bowl and then using a three inch toilet brush to clean off the seals.

Have you been keeping water in the bowl constantly or did it dry out?
