Blue Ox Stands by their Products

In February 2014, our first day of traveling in the new year, my Blue Ox Aventa LX tow bar failed after 350 miles and 50 miles from our destination. One of the two bars became disconnected and dragged on the pavement. No damage occurred to my Jeep or Motor home. It cost me a $75 cab ride to recover my toad and about $1000 for a new Road Master tow bar at the nearest Camping World.

My Blue OX tow bar was purchased in 2007 as a factory rebuilt model on ebay. It was shipped directly from Blue OX. It was replaced once by Blue OX and serviced by a Blue OX rep about two years ago. We towed our Jeep about 100k miles until it failed. I reported the incident on RV.net and sent my post and multiple photos to Blue OX. Never received any reply.

Prior to our summer 2015 travels I loaded the damaged tow bar in the MH and looked for an opportunity to return it to Blue Ox. In September 2015 at the SMART travel Group National Muster in Perry, Georgia there was a Blue OX vendor and Factory rep there so I left it with him with my request that he return it to the factory so the cause of the failure could be determined.

The Factory rep immediately disassembled it and found pieces of a shattered roll pin that previously secured the threaded end of the bar.

A few weeks later I received a phone call from Blue Ox saying since I had returned a damaged tow bar they would send me a brand new one.

This week a brand new Blue Ox Aventa LX tow bar and new safety cables arrived at my door at no cost. I look forward to continuing our travels with Blue OX. I love American companies that stand behind their products.

  • We found the Blue Ox system to be a good product but we made the change to the Demco Dominator. We had the Blue Ox for 10 years (36,000 miles) when we purchased our new coach. I wanted to have our Blue Ox serviced / rebuilt at that time just for safety sake. I called Blue Ox corporate and the connected me with the rebuild department. I was told that mine needed to be replaced as it has served its life expectancy. I checked around and liked what I saw with the Demco Dominator. The warranty is excellent. The safety cables are built into the unit as well as the light cable storage bar. The bars can also be unlocked even with the unit being in a bind. The Demco is compatible with the Blue Ox tow plate which we currently have on our Jeep. We found the Blue Ox base plate to have a better installed appearance on our Jeep Wrangler. We have used it for two years now and really like it. I think that it is worth considering.
  • I reluctantly purchased the Roadmaster tow bar because we were on travel, on a schedule and it was the only one available where we were. I've always considered Blue OX to be a quality product and probably the best. The Blue OX is rated at 10K where the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain is rated for 6K and my Jeep is about 4.5K. I like the additional margin of the BO.

My two years experience with the Roadmaster was fine, no problems but I'll gladly use the BO and sell the RM.

We seldom tow on anything but quality road surfaces but I was amused that the Road Master All Terrain Falcon Owners manual includes this Caution:

"This tow bar is designed for use on paved roads only. ROADMASTER does not recommend off-road tow-ing, nor does ROADMASTER warrant the tow bar for off-road use".

As much as anything, I'm impressed with the attitude of Blue OX. I made no demands or requests for a new system. My sole interest was to get the damaged components back to them to determine the cause and correct the design if necessary. They stood by their product two years later when I finally got around to getting it back to them.
  • My Blue Ox base plate failed after 3-4 years of use. They sent me a new and redesigned one free. All I had to do is ship them the broken one back. Good Company

I'm glad that everything worked out for you in the end. It appears that if you are persistent enough, Blue-Ox will stand behind their products.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience

Blue ox replaced my base plate free of charge. Problem was a dealer installed it improperly with out all the bolts.

My experience with blue ox was very good

Thing is and since you've went with Road Master in the meanwhile, are you going to be using the Blue Ox as well, given your history with them?
I think I'd sell it, while still new in the box, if it was me.
