Many "mechanics" and "technicians" only know how to replace parts. A true professional finds out why something happened and solves the underlying problem before replacing parts. Unfortunately too many shops give the impression that they only hire professionals and it is the customer that is paying for their "on the job" training as the mechanic learns his trade.
