I'm guessing the rears were drum brakes and what he probably did was shift one of the brake shoes until a spring popped. He now has a loose brake shoe that is flopping around inside the drum. If this is the case, the wheel will have to be pulled to fix things. - DSDP_DonExplorerWhen the brakes let loose after being rusted to the drums, they do let go with a bang. He may not have done any damage.

It has happened to me. I just put it in reverse and gently hit the accelerator. Put it in forward and do the same. After a cycle or two of this he should be fine.
