- SoCalDesertRid1ExplorerPlenty of Jeeps running around with jerry gas cans mounted on the back, beyond the rear bumper. Been doing it for years all across the USA. Not saying it's a good idea, but it's likely quite legal in most states.
- The_LogansExplorerFriends that we were traveling with we're pulled over and ticketed in Florida for having a a flammable substance (the gas in the generator) beyond the protection of the bumper. They had to drain the fuel before they we're allowed to proceed.
I guess that it makes sense 'cause it could get ugly in an accident. I don't know how other states handle the issue. - Horizon170Explorer
- SoCalDesertRid1ExplorerMost RV rear bumpers are 16ga or thinner tube. That's very thin. I would not mount the generator carrier to any bumper that is not at least .120" wall tube. 3/16" wall tube (.188") would be better. Also, inspect how the bumper is mounted to the frame. Some are barely hanging on there...
- jaycocreekExplorer IIThe bumper shown in the picture is the same one I have on my class c..It is a bolt on bumper,no welds just like a receiver hitch and appears to be much more capable of weight bearing than the one on my travel trailer.I'm sure it is strong enough for a 50 lb generator.
My C has a 4K Onan but I would like to have my 2K Honda with me for everything but AC without using the hitch haul, that I use now to carry it and other things.
After seeing this picture I posted, I thought it would be convenient to have one for short trips as I have the exact same bumper...Looks pretty stout.. - RoyBExplorer IIGot lots of hits on GOOGLE IMAGES by just typing in 'RV Bumper mount gen carrier'
The big problem most folks run into is to make your bumper strong enough to carry any additional weight load like a generator... Mods are required to the bumper setup...
Another issue I would have doing this is preventing thief of your high dollar generator... It seems that being out in the open is almost yelling "TAKE ME --- TAKE ME"... I keep my 2KW Honda Generator secured in the tailgate section of my locked truck bed that also has a locked folding hard panel bed cover... It is totally out of sight and goes where I go with my truck... when I need to run the generator I just pull it out onto the dropped tail gate with my locking cable still in tact. I never would leave the generator at the camp site when none of us were around...
Just my thoughts here... Occasionally I will see one mounted on the rear bumper of a trailer or Truck Camper.
Roy Ken - IAMICHABODExplorer IIThe rear bumpers are not really strong, made out of small gauge steel and just welded on,I would suggest instead that you use a hitch mounted Generator carrier.
You don't want this to happen - GordonThreeExplorerWouldn't a rig like that have a dedicated generator compartment?
- ScottGNomadThat looks to be a very nice home-made mount.
