Buying a Class A coach in Texas

I plan to buy a coach from a private party (not a dealer) in Texas. I plan to fly there in a couple of weeks and drive it home to West Virginia.

I will need some sort of temporary tag good for a few days to drive it home, where I will obtain a West Virginia title and registration.

I called the Texas DMV to see what I needed to do to get a temporary tag. They referred me to the tax office in the county where the current owner lives.

My conversation with the county tax office does not inspire confidence. I got a series of different answers as the person to whom I was speaking realized that my circumstances did not fit each answer that she just gave.

I’ve previously bought vehicles from private parties in other than my home state, and what I am hearing from the county tax office is very different from my own past experience in other states. And some of what I was told by the tax office just doesn’t make sense based on my past experience.

If anyone has recently purchased a Class A coach from a private party in Texas and driven it to another state to title and register, please tell me what your experience was in getting a temporary permit in Texas, including what all documentation you needed to show at the tax office.

Based on your question, I assume that the coach does not have current TX registration. Is that correct?

    Not correct.

The coach is currently titled and registered in Texas. The current owner will be purchasing a different coach, therefore will keep the current plates.

I’m not sure that it would be legal for me to drive it back with his plates anyway after I pay him and the title is signed over to me.

  • I bought mine from a private party in TX and drove it back to AR. All I did was call my insurance agent, gave him the VIN # and he sent me an insurance certificate. When I bought the coach I got a bill of sale and headed back to AR. I was told that the bill of sale and insurance certificate was all that was required and that I had 10 days to register it in my home state. I also had the title which he had signed over to me with the current date on it. The title also had a bill of sale on the back. I would be more worried about getting a clear title. I had no problems, maybe I was lucky that I did not get stopped.
