CB Radios

Just curious, does anyone still use or have a CB radio when traveling?
  • Have one and use it when caravanning with the Good Sam chapter annual extended trip or just traveling with others. If you are traveling with a group it's a good way to communicate with all the group at one time. Like to coordinate a lunch stop or point of interest. Some groups require you to have one.
  • Yes, I do.
I also have an All-Mode, All-Band Amateur radio in the truck, and a two meter rig in the motorhome.

Keep in mind that if you wish to join a 4X4 club outing, a CB radio may be required. FRS, GMRS (license required) or Amateur (license required) radios will not do.

Thanks all. Mainly as many stated here...to find out the stall in traffic, lane closed ahead or what. Maybe I will give it a try.

    CB Radio
I use my CB for the following conditions:
    1. monitor road conditions, accidents, alternative routes when traffic is backed up due to an accident or construction.
    2. monitor the locations of area "Bears" with info from truckers in combination with my "Valentine" radar detector.
    3. Backing into RV sites, using a handheld CB, a person can guide me in centering my RV both on sides and front and back and prevent any accidents, i.e.tree limbs.
    4. Road exits to take when in areas unknown to me, what lane to be in when entering congested areas of traffic.
    5. Common complaint of "trucker language" is controlled by the "squelch" knob. Personally I have heard as offensive or worse "trucker language" walking around a local High and Jr. schools.
    6. I monitor channel 17 on the west coast and ch. 19 over the rest of the country.
    7. Don't waste any time with Channel 13, which is supposed to be for RVer's to use. A long time ago, it was an idea to create a separate channel just for RVers to use but the idea never caught on. Some RVers display a channel number that they monitor.

yup. we keep it on while traveling. it has come in handy several times.

  • I put one in our MH and we have hand held units for when we are backing up. We monitor CH13 but have yet to get another RVer it. When traffic jams up we go to CH19 for a listen. It is not used like the old days, but we find it handy and nice to have for when we are traveling with other vehicles.

I have one under the seat set for TRUCKERS freq. Squelch turned up all the way so I don't have to listen to all of the NASTYs on there.

Only comes in handy when in bad traffic. Follow the big trucks...

Have never heard or talked to another RV'er using CB radio. Have more success using FRS RADIOS talking with other RV CAMPER folks...

There was some comments on here trying to get a RV CHANNEL setup for all of us to tune to - never heard anymore about it...

We use CELL PHONES here to keep in touch with family traveling with us along the roadways...

  • My coach came with one, but I rarely use it. If there's a traffic tie up I'll sometimes turn it on to see if a trucker reports what's happening, but other than that, it's off. That said, we don't use the radio either. Wife and I actually talk to each other while under way....:).....Dennis
  • I have one in ours. Mainly use it when the traffic is stopped on the highway. Can find out what lane you need to be in and what the hold up is.
