Changing coolant in V-10

I have a 2004 Jayco MH with the Ford V-10 engine. Since I bought it used from a dealer 2 years ago I have no service records. Although there is less than 20K miles on the engine it is still a 10 year old unit. I am thinking about whether I need to flush the cooling system and replace the old coolant. I need some educated opinions on whether this is a good idea and how much trouble if I do it myself. I know I can drain the radiator and get some of the coolant out but how hard is it to get to the plugs on the engine block? Don't see much sense in just draining the radiator unless I can get ALL the coolant out of the engine.
  • I would have all fluids changed, transmission, brake, coolant, power steering, rear gear oil. Put in good synthetics in all. I would also have the gas and air filter changed.
  • I use the Ford gold coolant. It's only a few bucks a gallon more than the generic stuff, there is no chance of compatibility issues, and it's a "long life" coolant. I use distilled water with it as opposed to tap water.
  • GO 5 spec coolant is similar or identical to Ford Gold.

Bryan, what's the correct replacement for the OEM Ford "Gold Stuff" especially if it isn't fully drained/flushed?
  • 10 years is a good time to do it. Don't early about getting is all however. Drain what you can, and refill. Unless to replace and major cooling system parts (ie radiator) the new coolant, even if only half the system capacity, will have enough additives to maintain proper corrosion protection. The anti-freeze part doesn't ever break down.

I definitely would not attempt removing any of the freeze plugs.
  • I've never made a big deal of getting all the coolant out, but if it is easy and convenient then it is the best way. I also don't worry about "flushing" the system if the coolant and what you can see of the radiator core looks good. I've had immaculate cooling systems in vehicles where only half the coolant was changed at a time. If I could change only half the coolant easily, I'd change it twice as often as recommended. I've always stuck to factory spec coolants to prevent mixing or incompatibility issues. I use distilled water for coolant concentrate.

My opinion a complete change would be necessary if the coolant were degraded, rusty or non existent. Most later model stuff that isn't the case.
