chevy express hood paint peeling

I have a 2008 four winds on a 2007 chevy express platform. for the past couple years I have noticed some small paint areas missing from the front of the hood. The dark grey primer is visible. Yesterday while washing it more paint peeled of when rinsing with the hose. Has anyone else had a problem with this happening? I have noticed other chevy vans on the road with similar missing paint spots in the same area along the front edge of the hood.
  • GM has had paint issues on pickups and vans since the 1980's. Solution is to have it sanded down and repainted.
  • My 2008 Express van has the same problem. Now that you have the problem you will be amazed at how many other chev van bodies have peeling paint on their hoods too. I was quoted $350 for a strip and repaint. I have been meaning to get it painted for over a year and yes it does keep spreading. Good luck.
  • Well that stinks.. already showing 3 or 4 small spots on mine. Between the trans leaking and this. I had high hopes my last Chevy experiences wouldn't be repeated. Looks like I was wrong!
  • I have a 2006 and it has not shown any of this, maybe it a year model thing.

After looking at This Thread I could not find any mention of it or the Transmission Leak, Maybe they should be added and see if there any others that have either problem.
  • As I understand it, flaking paint is bad prep. of the primer or bad quality top coat.

If the paint comes off easy (but the primer stays put), maybe you can flake off the rest of paint with a pressure washer, clean/key the primer and re-coat.

  • Nothing will stick to the original primer. I tried to touch up with some duplicolor rattle can primer and paint from Oreilly. I had planned to only hand sand the areas that had peeled, but the more I sanded the more paint flaked off. I decided to just stop sanding and scuff up the clear coat around the edges and spray over it. I primered, painted, and clear coated. It started flaking in the same spots within a few months.

I think the only way to do it right would be to take it off, take it down to the metal, and paint the entire hood.

Or for about $5 a can you can touch it up every so often. Using the paint code from the door jam I was able to get a really good match.
  • Bummer. If it's only the hood, places like Maaco and Earl Scheib might be a good solution.

  • I went to the Chevrolet website, contacted customer service (Email) and received a call back. They scheduled an appointment at the local Chevy dealer body shop. I went this morning and was told the paint on the hood is definitely delaminating, and that he will relay that info back to customer service. He said since there is only 13000 miles on the motorhome there should be no objections and I should be scheduled to go back to have the hood removed, stripped, repainted and reinstalled. I should be getting a call back from customer service tomorrow morning and will post the results then.
  • Great! Hope they take care of you. Let us know how that pans out.

  • I just dropped it off at the dealership. I agreed to pay a $100 deductible and Chevy will cover the rest. I should have it back tomorrow.
