City Water In Filling Fresh Water Tank

Began having trouble with the city water in filling my fresh water tank a couple of trips ago(2007 Fleetwood Terra). Water pump is Shurflo 4008, installed in Oct. 2015. After I got home, installed new check valve in pump. Current trip, been on the road about 4 weeks. No problems, until last night. This morning water is flowing from the fresh water fill cap. This time I closed a valve located between the water pump and the fresh water tank. Now the filter bowl on the output side of the pump is leaking, which says to me that somewhere there is another valve open somewhere that is allowing city water into pump. Any suggestion as to where that valve might be located. The alternative solution is to install an anti-siphon valve or ball valve on the output side of the pump.
  • I put the pump back on city water three days ago and have not had any instances of water flowing back into the fw tank. But since I had already ordered the anti siphon valve, I decided to install it. I cutoff all water to the pump, turned on the pump, and opened a faucet to relieve all pressure in the lines. Then I installed a Shurflo anti-siphon in-line on the outflow side of the pump. I put air into the accumulator (approx 26psi) and turned water back on. Eveything's good, except. About every 7-10 seconds the pump takes what I would describe as a "bump". It's like it is receiving a jolt of electricity, not long enough for the pump to engage, and then it cycles off. The whole process is no more than a second in duration. I left the pump on this afternoon and this same cycle continued. Not sure if it is air in the line or what. I plan on running on the pump for a couple of days and see what happens. Just curious if anyone has any other ideas.
  • In the wet bay of my Bounder, I have a lever that allows for me to fill my FW tank with the city water connection, or just use city water at pressure.

My water pump does not run (I switch the pump off) if I use the city water position.

When I fill my FW tank from the wet bay connection, I can observe my water tank filling from the center bay, and when full, it will overflow and dump the excess water underneath the motorhome. I don't think I have ever filled my water tank from the filler opening on the side of the coach.

I also don't filter my water anymore, since I was going thru many filter cartridges a year. My whole coach filter body is just a straight flow thru now. We only use campground water to flush and take showers.

I do not use my ice maker, usually just buy a bag of ice. That way I know I'm getting good clean ice.

We take water for the dogs, since I want them to drink house water and not get sick from drinking out of area water.

When traveling we rarely hook up to campground water for an overnight or even two night stay. We just use water from the FW tank.
  • Yes and water pressure is inder 50 psi. I'm thinking now of installing an anti-siphon valve between the accumulator and the pump.
  • Sounds like the original prob,. could be caused by too much water presure. Do U use a limiter on the hose?
  • There's a check vavle in your water pump that keeps city water pressure from flowing backwards through you pump. It probably has debris in it. The filters you can add before the pump help but wont completley alleviate the problem for some reason.
Take the head of the pump apart (very easy) and simply rinse all the parts off under water. Re-assemble and it wil be fine.
I've had to do this several times, especially when an RV was new.
  • We always use the FW tank and fill it by adding water via the fill opening and never use the campground inlet connection. Yes it requires refilling the Tank every few days but it eliminates the problem as stated AND if there was ever a leak in the system the pump would come on and we would know it. We always turn off the pump when we leave the RV.
  • GB,

Many RVs have a valve that connects the potable system (that can be fed from city water) to the pump suction (inlet) side. It is there specifically to fill the potable tank from city water. It may be that this valve is either failed and not sealing or is not properly closed.

  • The filter should be on the input side or the suction side of the water pump. It's there to filter particles that may come in from your freshwater tank. If it's leaking it needs to be tightend or replaced. If the filter is on the output side it possibly allowed particles to get in your backflow valve inside the pump, therefore allowing water back into your freshwater tank. There is usually not a valve blocking city water from your pump as the backflow valve in your pump should not allow water past.
