Class A and Jekyll Island

Looking for some info on Class A's at Jekyll Island Campground. Is leveling or sand a problem? How about negotiating the roads with a 42' mh. As far as the campground goes, we normally carry a golf cart with us, are these common here. I have read a lot about bikes there. Are bikes more prevelant as compared to golf carts? Do you have to travel far to get to the beach? Just looking for info from anyone who has stayed here.
  • We go there every year. Used to have a 37 ft mh and now a 37 ft fiver. Golf carts are ok but must be street legal. we always take bikes for all the trails. There are over 22 miles of trails and at low tide you can ride on the beach. Several good restaurant's on the island and a lot just off. This is one of our favorite places. If you want more details send me a pm.

Have not taken motor home onto the island but daughter's car had a season pass.. The roads should be no problem, at least not the roads to the campground.

Within the campground we did not travel.. Darling Daughter worked for a summer at the Inn.

Most sites are fairly level, but you'll want a board under each jack to help prevent sinking into the dirt.

No problem negotiating turns with my almost 39ft MH, and I've seen longer in there.

Golf carts and bikes are common. There have been some changes in Georgia laws regarding golf carts...details here. I do remember from a visit at Jekyll about 3 weeks ago that the campground was pointing out the new laws about golf carts. I don't know how well they are enforced, but the law enforcement on Jekyll is the Georgia State Patrol.

There are extensive, well maintained, bike trails all over the island, so you can bike everywhere if you like.

It's a big campground with dirt streets and sometimes a very healthy bug population so take your bug spray. If you're at the very back of the campground, it's probably 2/3 mile to the entrance, and another 1/2 mile (my guesses at distance) to the beach on the ocean side. Not a bad walk if you like to walk, but you will not want to carry 30 pounds of chairs/beach gear, etc.

Jekyll also has several large parking lots adjacent to the beach, and they will allow you to park your motorhome in the lots during the daytime.

We like the campground. The only downside is moderate dust due to the dirt streets, and bugs.

Be sure to go out to the pier, and then walk the beach (over the foot bridge to the right of the pier) around the sound and out to the ocean side beach. Very nice scenery.

Not many restaurants on the island at this time. The pizza place at the put put golf course/Red Bug Motors Rental area has good pizza.

There is a moderate sized grocery store in the shopping area, but the selection is not as varied as a major chain store.

  • I stayed there several years ago. Some sites are level. Some are not. Mine was way off level and I used a bunch of leveling blocks under the rear dualies and even some under the jacks to reduce the jacks extension. There were no other sites available at the time and we were meeting friends that were already there or I would not have accepted the site.

The beach is an easy walk across the paved road by the campground. My friend and I took a walk each morning to the beach, down a ways and then to the paved road and back to the campground. That was about three miles as I recall but might have been two. When we wanted to take coolers and stuff and sit on the beach we drove our car to the beach.
