Lots of ways of doing it. I have left gray open until the day before departure for years. Close the day before to accumulate shower and wash water to provide good flush behind the black to clean the hose. Also flushes the bottom of the gray tank.
X3 or 4 on this! Excellent advice!!
WoodGlue - RollnhomeExplorerRVing is much like sailing. Ask 5 of your fellow sailors the same question and you'll get 7 different answers.
- Old-BiscuitExplorer IIIYes you can leave the grey open.......
BUT I don't for the reasons mentioned by others and my own:
1) Soap scum, dead skin, food particles can/do collect on bottom of tank and dry out...tank drain line comes out side of tank and there is a lip. Dried out stuff can accumulate and stink
2) Sewer flies.....they live in the sewer lines and will invade your grey tank due to the dried stuff that stinks
3) I'm LAZY and only want to deal with dumping one time. If I leave grey open then I'll forget to close it and won't have any grey when I go to dump because not only am I lazy but forgetful too
4) Grey tank doesn't have a tank flusher so if stuff dries out then I have to go to extra trouble/means/involvement to flush grey tank....I'm LAZY - jorbill2orExplorer II

X3 only because I'm lazy. . I don't want to be on the middle of my shower to discover my holding tank was more filled than I thought , which has happened ..
Haven't had a problem with gray tank build up or flys/ bugs in 40 years rving but .. Now I have something new to worry and ponder ;-) - robatthelakeExplorerBoth Closed , Open to Dump Only!
- bthomfordeExplorerGrey Open
Black Closed - Road_DogExplorerLeaving any tank open is bad news! You can get backwardation of sewer gas and bacteria that will invade your tanks, plus you invite sewer flies to nest in your tanks. Not good at all. Leave them closed until your ready to dump unless you want someone elses bacteria in your motorhome, and teeny flies that fly out every time you flush!

I think it's best to leave it closed & dump it when it gets full. Plus when you go to flush the black tank, having a good deal of grey water to flush after the black dump helps.
An excellent proceedure. - RollnhomeExplorer

Yep this works best for me too - dons2346ExplorerIt's OK to leave the grey tank open on a diesel but never, never on a gasser :)
