Class A Diesel vs Gas?

I know this question has been asked MANY times but given today's environment and technology I am reposting this question. I know the price gap between gas and diesel is not insignificant, the diesel chassis has more storage and weight capability, the life of a diesel is longer, the pulling and climbing power on a diesel is greater....so does it boil down to what fits each person's specific needs?

  • Floor plan is still the most important thing to consider when buying an RV. You spend more time relaxing in the coach than you will driving the coach. The average mileage put on an RV is still around 4000-5000 miles per YEAR so for most owners, longevity is a non-issue as they will never wear out the engine in any RV.
Maintenance and repairs should also be considered. If you do it all yourself, the DP will still cost more for the parts.
If you break down on the road, the Ford or GM gasoline engines can be repaired by any garage and most parts are available at any auto parts stores. The DP will have to be taken to a diesel shop, and parts will be more difficult to obtain while on the road.
Neither engines are going to break down very often but if you are looking at used coaches, you have to consider repairs.
  • The Diesel will also have a much better and smother ride because they have air ride suspension, and are usually packed with more useful features. Tiffin is a good brand. I come from a family of RV'ers my Uncle has a 2011 Allegro Breeze 28footer, And my old man just got the New Phaeton with the tag axle, both have a superior ride and power to move.

After 30 plus years of driving a diesel for a living. We own a 38 ft Winnebago Adventurer with an 8.1 GM with an Allison transmission. We tow a Jeep Wrangler weighing about 4400lbs. I average 7.25 mpg over the last 2years. About 6000 miles. The only way I would own a DP is if I could find someone else to pay for it. For me the best part is the air ride.

Brings up a tangent question, are the air ride upgrades on a gas chassis comparable to a DP? Are the air rides worth it to add to a gasser? I've seen them for about $500

  • Never owned a MH before, but if the difference between Gas and Diesel MH is anything comparable to Diesel and Gas trucks, go with the diesel! If I "were" in the mood to shop for a MH, I'd consider ONLY diesel, especially after owning 2 different dually's, both Chevy, but one gas and the other diesel.

Storage is not neccesarily greater. I've seen some gassers with a lot of storage. Capacity maybe. Longevity really isn't an issue on either. The v-10 will last a long time unless you are talking a million miles. Other than power related points you already noted, the ride and noise is usually superior to a gasser. Thats probably the biggest seller for most. Fit and finish is not always better but usually is. The down side is cost. You pay for that power and comfort. Depends on your needs wants and budgets. The benefits are there, will you use it enough to pay the hefty price tag and do you have the money or do you want to spend it? Pretty simple really. Not sure why this always gets into a debate. DP's are better in a lot of ways but they cost more. Just like anything. Decide what you want and what you want to pay.
