Class A travel without interstates

I hate traffic and will do what I can to avoid it. Sometimes thats not possible.

When we do our Virginia trip, on paper I go 45 minutes out of my way to avoid DC. The reality is most of the time it's actually faster as we avoid the Beltway traffic.

A few years ago we did a run to NC in the car. On the way home friends took the Beltway route, we did our normal avoidance route. They hit traffic - we got home hours before they did.

When I am travelling in my A however, I plan my trip around big cities no differently than I do with regards to weather. I plan my timing such that I pass through those areas during times of least congestion.

I don't think Interstates go anyplace today that trucks didn't go before interstates. So anybody should be able to get there without interstate

When I have the time I will jump off the interstate and take a US highway. Being east coast based I've been able to hit about 75% of US17 between Winchester VA and Fort Myers FL and sections of US1. One of my RV Travel Bucket list items is to travel the length of US50 east to west then return on US30 west to east.

41’ MH and Almost always take US highways/ some state roads instead of freeways if reasonable because of more interesting things to see. We don’t generally avoid cities and in fact most times prefer the freeway through or bypass freeway around , but we do pick the “time” we go through them.
Perhaps the work life I spent driving triples makes that more comfortable as the motorhome and towed feel small comparatively. That and I learned to be clear and intentional in traffic as I’m bigger than them, they will move : )
My Apple maps allows “avoid highways” ( freeways) and I preview the route the day / days before. We run generally Apple Maps and a Garmin at the same time ,only if they disagree do I get concerned. The Navigator has the paper Rand McNally map handy

We avoid interstates almost all the time unless we absolutely have to make time and that is rare.

We travel off the x-ways as much as possible. Usually on US highways, state and county roads. We haven't had any problems and we miss the big cities. We also have never paid a toll in 10 years.

Coming into Chicago and then going north were the worst roads I've seen as for potholes and traffic and I generally don't mind traffic. If I need to be somewhere, I take the main highways, if not I take the smaller roads. The only problem with the smaller roads if you have to pay more attention to the roads for sharp corners, driveways, farm equipment, etc, so at times you don't get to look at the scenery as much.

I do my routing via the old Rand McNally.

yea, we avoid cities as much as possible but, IMO, you can't avois them all. most cities will have a bypass ihterstate around the main part of the city, any decent GPS should allow you to route around. what we do is pop,the shortest route into google maps and adjust from there. once done i pop that into our built-in gps.
