Class B insurance

We will have our RT delivered next week and I went to get Insurance but they didn't even show Road Trek in their computer. They did find that it was a GM Van thru the VIN. Any of you been thru this and if so what kind of coverage do you have?
This is not the first RV through State Farm we have insured but the first time for this issue.
  • Your Roadtrek's VIN is going to come up as either a Chevy or Sprinter depending upon the model RT you are getting. You do not want "auto/vehicle" insurance. You want RV insurance which is very different - much broader coverage and usually full replacement - and a lot less expensive for the policy.

My Roadtrek is insured through Progressive. Before I took delivery, I called them up, told them I wanted RV insurance, they asked for the make, model and year of the RV and then we went through the coverage options. They had no problem finding the Roadtrek to insure as an RV and they knew that the VIN was going to show as a Chevy van and not an RV. The policy that they wrote is very specifically for an RV.
  • In British Columbia,Canada one has to insure a Class B RV with ICBC(Govt insurance) ONLY as private insurers wont insure them at all as far as I can determine. I got full comprehensive coverage at full market value with 5 million third party liability. This might be helpful to BC residents contemplating buying and insuring an RV in BC. I had same issue with my two previous C Class RVs too
  • Having RV replacement insurance for five years and campsite liability insurance seemed like a reasonable goal. Last year I checked with Progressive and Good Sam. Neither of these companies could provide liability insurance above $500,000; because I live in California, I was told.

Happy with my existing insurance company that could only insure RVs as cars, I signed up with Progressive for the RV and bought a stand-alone umbrella policy to cover both of the underlying companies. The umbrella is with United States Liability Insurance Group; through an independent agent.
