We tour in a small antique class A. We have never had a towed. We do have a pair of "inflatable" (folding actually) bicycles that live under the dinette while we travel. We can go anyplace a van can go and if we need, we can rent a car most places. Our usual long excursions are a month because we don't have a home keeper and that is the longest that the post office will hold mail.

we have a small class c 24 foot four winds and were even able to get through key west with no problem. easy to drive and park. would never go back to a larger rv.

On rare occasions we will rent a car. IMHO I would have to rent a lot of cars to make it more expensive than sitting up a toad and pulling it. NOTE on rental cars would suggest paying for there insurance. If you have a wreck with out it you can and probably will be charged for the rental fee for the number of days that the car was out of service and billed for reduced value of the car. Your insurance will not pay these charges.

Not sure that I can add anything that has not already been discussed. We are 26ft, traveled cross the USA and through a number of Canadian Provence's without a toad. Like others we seldom use all the hook ups. Mostly just electricity.

We often have to walk a way to some attractions/restaurants if in a congested area. But that is good for us so no complaints. If we are near a large city we often take public transport to attractions. Have meet some enjoyable local people who have provided addition information on places to see or good restaurants, or easier ways to access popular locations.

It really depends on your capabilities and how you enjoy traveling and seeing the sights. Occasionally we will pull a scooter big enough to carry the two of us and that is a fun way to get around as well.

We have a 26' and travel without a toad. We carry bikes, and don't hesitate to rent a car (Enterprise - they pick you up!), take the subway, or call a cab (Uber these days) on the rare occasions when we want a car. $ and hassle wise, we come out way ahead.

Most tourist areas have parking that will accommodate buses. We've found almost all of them are happy to accommodate our RV too. You won't be parking right in front of a big city attraction, but you can usually park within a few blocks. We can fit into a normal parking space _IF_ the back can hang over a grassy area. Occasionally we arrive early (an hour or so before the attraction open) to easily find a spot and then enjoy breakfast before the attraction opens.


90%+ of our travels are in places where parking isn't a big deal.

We have a 27 foot Tioga 26Q, have never towed, have never felt the need. If you do social camping with a group and need to trade rides to local sites and restaurants, a toad may seem necessary. You can rent a car to tour Boston, take shuttle bus to tourist areas, take tour buses. We try to do all last-minute shopping for supplies on the way, but it only takes 5 minutes to unhook and run into town. Seldom have problem parking close to a restaurant. I use my take-apart mobility scooter if needed. Contrast this with complication, etc., of taking a toad. You can also use toad when desired or leave it home when not.

Overall, short trips we love the shorter RV's.

We did full time for 10 years on our boats on the Great Lakes, Chesapeak Bay, Fla Keys, Bahamas and 10 years with our 25 foot airstream. However you need to get along well and keep things picked up. We use our over head bunk as storage and make the dinette and couch to sleep. Both are upgraded so they are nice to set on and sleep on. We have a system so making them and unmaking them takes only a couple min.
