clear coat peeling

My 1990 Beaver had that problem......I was told the previous owner had two mechanics at his truck line and on a slow day they decided to "fix" the paint on the Boss's motorhome. So they did a clearcoat which lasted for several years but then peeled. I never heard if he thanked them or fired them.....I brushed the peel off and waxed it.....it was 18 years old then but it stayed hidden while I owned it.

A friend of mine has a 2011 Thor with 14k miles on it and all the clear coat came off the front cap two years ago.

I think older rv's with gelcoats are easier to maintain once reaching a certain age. The painted rigs look awesome but they are another maintenance item that might cost a lot down the road.

I have a 2001 Beaver Contessa......same issue along the roof sides and a few spots on fender area's. I have learned to just wet sand what clear is left without going to far and then I waxed and buffed the sides. Not perfect but looks a lot better than flaking clearcoat.....not going to put 20.ooo in a paint job!

rgatijnet1 is spot on. to much time elapsed between the base coat and clear coat so the chemical bond was not good. the correct repair is sand off and re-apply clear coat, the sanding will give you a mechanical bond.

It's very common when paint is exposed to lots of sun and heat, without proper care such as a wax or sealant. Silver paint is known to have more of this problem and tons of vehicles in the south have this. Poor maintenance to the paint and again it's common for neglected paint. It may just need a wet sanding and clear coating.

I can attest that on my 2003 Dutch Star the factory did NOT use the same quality of painting procedures on the area from the gutter line up as they did on the front, rear, and side walls. Yes, I've heard what the factory has to say about it, and it doesn't sound correct,....... (not at all).

We have it also on our rear cap mostly... which is the unfortunate color of black so it shows. So, eventually I suppose we'll get the back cap painted.
We use ours most of the year so sitting in the sun is a given.
It is cosmetic. It bothers me, but not enough to spend the money to get it fixed quite yet.

Very common and you'll see it on a lot of coaches. Mine is NO exception. It's been painted twice by the factory to no avail. That last quote I had was $1800 by an independent paint shop in IN. The factory wanted $3200. No way is that going to happen. The factory says, "you don't wax it enough" LOL I told them especialy when I'm up on a ladder in that situation I go overboard to take care of the hard to reach areas. Another question I had was why then is the sides and rear on the lower portion of the coach not peeling????? Their answer, "it's not in the sun as much". LOL again. The only thing I can add is it's plain poor workmanship.
