Coach Steps

I am seriously thinking of replacing coach steps with manual steps, wondering if anyone has ever done that?

  • I disconnected the electric steps about 6 months because they wouldn't close and sometimes it wouldn't open. We were in transit and just didn't have the time or knowledge to work on them right then and there. These steps are SCS/Frigette coach steps.
So this morning I cleaned and lubricated these steps and now they are working again.
  • No way, long jump getting out. even longer getting back in. I would find some good used ones, if could not fix them.
  • As said above forget the manual steps. That first step is a very big step when you forget to look for the extended step. JMO
  • I agree, for the above reasons ,not a Good idea. Forget just once the steps aren't there and big problems happen! Certainly the step frame unbolts and could be replaced with the steps from a trailer But..... ?
  • Richard, It would help if we knew what make and model steps were involved.

While I have never done this, I have learned that the bolt pattern for steps like mine are replaceable, a very easy task.

I too wonder why you would want to remove the automatic steps.
  • I guess the obvious question is why. It would be a safety issue to remove the automatic step. Manual steps work on trailers because you have to pull them out to get in and then close them when driving.

On a motor home you would have to jump out and then open steps. Then you would either have to close them and crawl in or lay on the floor and pull them in. Your idea doesn't make sense and could be a hip or leg breaker. Maybe even a face plant!

If you're having issues, rebuild and adjust properly or replace with new. When my Monaco was about 8 years old, I bought all new bushings for the pivot points and replaced them. I adjusted and lubed the rest of the mechanism and they worked like new.
