We have the same type of shades. Yes they go up on the outside and the metal pole is what you use to reach the top corners of the shades. It just assists in getting them on - which is very quick and simple. You will enjoy having those shades and rain will not harm them. We were told not to fold them but to roll them when you put them away - they will last longer.
