converter issues

Checked batteries for upcoming season. Starting battery was dead.approx. 11 volts. house battery read 12.6 . I am plugged into shore power. In the past I thought house battery was 13.6 from converter. Disconnected house battery and checked converter for voltage. only read 10.55 volts. is there anything other than bad converter that would cause this ,relays , solenoid, connections etc. Upgrading to converter with charge wizard. Is it common for converter to fail by decreased voltage output. Unit is 15 years old. thanks KB

I can think of a number of things that would give low converter output voltage. The starred ones I have seen with my own eyes.

    *Bad volt meter needing re-calibration
*Bad connections both AC and DC sides
    Heavy loads
    *Bad converter (Not mine)
Low AC voltage (my converter can compensate to a point).

In the case of Bad Connections: My converter is a "plug in" model (has a cord with plug) that likes to come unplugged. But in that case output is zero.
  • With battery disconnected, AC power supply to converter ON...converter output should be minimum of 13.2VDC.

Lower voltage than 13.2V converter is NOT functioning properly.

15 yrs. is pretty good service for a 'dumb' converter.
The 'smart' converter will serve you (and batteries) well :B
