- randallbExplorerI purchased ABS air ducts and 12 volt inline blowers for the W-22 chassis we were going to buy. We bought a pusher instead. Auxiliary brake cooling parts are available on line. PM me for more info.
Randy - Captain_HappyExplorerIf you go up a hill in second gear, come down in second gea, and if you go in 3rd gear, come down in 3rd gear. Out in the western US their are some very steep and very long upgrades. I'm talking miles.
- Drive slower gives more time to shed heat.
- Golden_HVACExplorerLocking out overdrive when going down hills will help the transmission and engine provide about 25% of the braking effort. On a really steep hill, you might need to slow below 45 MPH at the top, and shift to 2 gear.
Also if the brake caliper pins are not properly lubricated, then they can stick to much to the left or right. Properly lubricated, once you release the brakes, then the caliper is centered, and will not overheat. Without the lubrication, the pad will still be stuck between the back side of the caliper and the disk, overheating.
Fred. - crassterExplorer III always downshift and start down the long hills very slowly. Take your time pump the brakes and don't hold them.
- wolfe10ExplorerSorry, we don't have enough information to really help you.
No idea if this is a diesel with exhaust brake you are not using, a gas chassis with disk brakes that have not been serviced (caliper slides and change fluid) and are hanging up, new to driving a heavy vehicle and need advice, etc.
Details PLEASE. - devans47ExplorerNot sure what rig you have. I had a problem with front brakes heating. Mine was due to a problem with the rear brake adjusters not working.
- WyoTravelerExplorerTow/haul i.e. cruise control will hold speed down like mentioned in previous post. Don't go down the grade any faster than you went up. Let all those little cars fly by. Use your 4 way flashers when moving much slower then the traffic flow. Once you are below about 45 mph tow/haul will really slow you down. When rpm builds to about 5000 I use the brakes firmly to slow quickly, then release brakes and let engine do the work. Repeat the process as necessary every few miles. If you ride your brakes on mountain grades you will eventually run into real problems.
- J-RoosterExplorerDownshifting is best!
- wildmanbakerExplorerDo you think that your front brakes are overheating? If so, what are you indications? You get a lot of answers that may not pertain to you perceived problem, if you do not get more specific.
