Corian refinishing

I treat it just like wood. I cut it, join it, route it, sand it and finish it just like woodworking. Use adhesive for solid surface, it is available in colors that match yours.

Call a counter installation shop and make an appointment to go by their shop. It will take about an hour and doesn't cost that much. Much easier.

And that is fine for normal maintenance and for taking care of LIGHT marks on your counter top.
If you have a burn mark, or a deeper scratch, than sand paper, of various grades, is what it takes to get things back to "like new". I have used up to 20,000 grit sandpaper on the windshields of my airplanes to remove the fine scratches from debris in the air. ON a Corian counter top, you always start with as fine a grit as possible to remove the defect and then you use a few lighter grits until you get to the final polish stage. As one poster mentioned, you may want a semi-gloss appearance instead of a high gloss on your counter top. Remember the Corian is probably close to 1/2" thick so it can take a little sanding to remove a deep mark.

I have not done refinishing, but can pass along a tip. I am on my second set of Corian countertops. The first set was polished to a high gloss, and was hard to keep looking good. I had it professionally polished by the installation folks every couple of years.

The second set is polished to only a low satin type of gloss. It looks better with the dark color and is much easier to keep looking nice. Between the lower gloss and the darker color it looks great after 18 months of heavy use.

So maybe the answer is to take it all to lower gloss level and leave it there. You could experiment on a scrap if you have any.

Why not sandpaper? Sand paper comes in far finer grades than Scotchbrite.

I've sanded many, many cars after being fresh painted. A little 1500-2000 grit, keeping it wet while sanding, followed by the proper buffing compound makes for a nice, smooth, glass like finish.

I actually wet sanded and buffed our MH when it came home as I thought I could do a better job than the factory did. I was right. :B

I'm just wondering why refinishing Corian wouldn't be the same?

Maybe do a small area not seen to test your process first.

start out slow and stay slow, get you a spray bottle of clean water and many rags. Depending on how bad, you can start out at 250 plus, if not bad then go higher to start and slowly get the finish you want. Remember the higher number you go the sandpaper the smoother the finish and the easier to scratch again. I do ours every couple years.


I start out with 400 and end up in the thousands grit. My kit goes up to 15000 grit. See if I can find the link I use.
