cost question

Am looking at downsizing to a class C from 5er....can someone give me a ballpark figure of cost and what is involved in setting up a vehicle to pull(aka toad)....also pros/cons of towing with 4wheels on ground or using a dolly. Looking to tow a 2008 Pontiac Vibe...THANKS

  • If the car can be towed 4 down, look for a deal on a towbar. I managed to find a Blue Ox for $150 in my area. If you add a Ready Brake then even the basic non-telescoping tow bars (less than $100) would work. You could be all setup for around $700.

  • My parents towed a Chevy Cobalt behind their Class C.. they were looking for very LOW weight toad, as their MH was only 24ft. They chose a blue ox aventa tow bar and a ready brake braking system. The brake was installed after the tow bar (GA didn't require brake for under 3000 lbs), but they felt like it was needed for safety. Between purchasing the two and having them installed, it cost them about $3000. Now I will say that the Cobalt installation of the tow brackets was more than some vehicles as it required pulling the whole front bumper/grill area off during installation. Some cars/trucks take much less work. so that will vary your costs some. I also think if they had both things done at the same time, there may have been a bit less labor also.
  • Hi Kemer, My wee blonde and I just went through setting up our 2012 equinox for towing four down. We checked out a lot of different options on how to tow and finally decided to go with the Ready Brute Elite tow bar witch has the braking system built into the tow bar. Its a surge type braking system and WE have been happy with our choice of systems. We also have the car set up with diodes so we use the trailer light pig tail from the motor home for brake and turn lights on the car. The cost for setting up our system was about $2400 which included the base plates. Our equinox has a all wheel drive system that can be towed four down . There are several different types of systems out there so take a good look at all of them. Good luck on your choice and happy travels.
  • We tow a 2007 Vibe flat. Must be manual transmission to do so. No issues towing, for 7 years now.As for price, I t has been quite a while, I recall the most expensive part was the brake buddy.

  • You going to buy all NEW or will you also be in the market for used. Craigs list usually has a number of towing accessories for cheap. Includes the brake systems. BUT, they may not be for your particular vehicle. The tow bars and stuff will all be OK, but the base plates will need to be purchased new in all likelihood. I paid around $700 installed for my base plates from roadmaster. The falcon all terrain hitch with the cables etc came with the rv we bought. New for a hitch assy can run up to $1000 from what I have seen. Just look at a camp world catalog or go to etrailer, or trailer and marine I think it is and get some prices from them. They may be a little cheaper. I could have gotten my baseplate for about $150 less than I paid, but then you have to either install yourself or pay $75/hr up for someone to do for ya. I paid $39 for my install, also they installed the light kit. The brake system also came with the rv, they new run close to $8-900 or better depending on brand.

So you need to determine how you want to go. There are some rv junk yards that sell serviceable stuff, but generally limited to the tow hitch/bars.

As to the vibe is it a manual or auto? Check owners manual to see if it can be towed and if so how. On a trailer, 4 down etc.

have fun. We just went thru this in the last 18 months so I know what you are looking at.
  • I'm getting 15 MPG on Deisel and Propane is running about 3.49/gal. Insurance is about $600/yr.

Except in certain circumstances, you can run 4 down with a toad as long as it has a manual transmission. If you use a dolly it increases your towed weight. My max tow weight is 3500 lb and the Class 2 (2") tow receptacle can take 350# on it. You will most certainly need a towing brake system which runs north of $1000.

So far I have bought one starting battery, one house battery and a couple of miscellaneous body parts.
