Cracked exhaust manifold part 2

a continue of
old thread.

I have disassembled the 8.3 to the point of being now able to clean up the engine and start the re-assembly.
Parts were $923.00 and the labor was estimated to be $1400. so I decided to do the labor myself.
When I removed the turbo I found the bracket that holds the waste gate valve was broken, this now on order. this was holding the gate closed.
The normal turbo was not installed the one in place was a Holset 40 not the cummins OEM. (Banks intake kit)
The Manifold bolts that every one was worried about breaking when removed, all came out clean. I had soaked them every day with penetrating oil for well over a week.
It is ready to re-assemble this week. more to follow
  • Thanks for the update. I previously read your original post and was wondering how the repair was progressing.
  • Any chance that you can just repair the broken bracket, and beef it up where it broke? Replacing it with the same type may result in the same crack down the road.
  • Remember: Anti-Seize is your friend. Now and the next time you or anybody else has to work on it.

    Good luck with the reassemble.

X2 this thread stinks without pics.
  • Tom/Barb, don't know where your manifold was cracked but I had to replace a manifold gasket on mine a couple years ago. Mine was blowing hot exhaust gases on the dip stick tube that wasn't discovered until we were 2K miles on our way to Alaska. The tube developed a small hole and was blowing oil on the back of the coach and my truck. I had a new tube air freighted to a shop in Edmonton Alberta for repair. So that problem wouldn't happen again I had the shop split a small heater hose and put over the new dip stick tube. Something you may want to consider.

Our manifold was broken between the second and third ports from the rear of the coach. and was not blowing on anything but the engine block.
  • I just got off the phone with Banks Power products, worst phone tree i've ever hd to deal with, Only after tell the operator on their switch board that I had been passed to every dept. in their system did she connect me with the correct person the get a part on order.
a $25.25 part cost me an hour shop time to get on order.
