Crazy RPM guage

Newmar 2003 Mountain Aire on gas chassis with Vortec engine. When I start out all is well but after a while driving, the RPM gauge goes nuts, it will show my RPM and the suddenly go to ZERO or UP but the engine does not change, then it calms down and again it flips out and goes up or down or both then back to where it should be. We think we have checked for all the grounds and found nothing wrong. ANY ideas?

Thanks guys. Do I actually care if the RPM guage works, is it necessary to me? OR does it say somethiing wrong in engine computer etc.

I care a lot about the RPM gauge. I never exceed 4,000 rpm and when I climb mountains I run at about 3,500 rpm where max torque is developed.

Likewise going down mountains I keep the RPM below 4,000.

You can get a ScanGauge, or an UltraGauge, and it will tell you the RPMs.

Also that may help you troubleshoot the problem if it fluctuates too.
  • I have the Actia dash on my Monaco coach with the 8.1L engine. When mine would act up, it also affected the other gauges as well, including the fuel gauge.
One thing that I found would correct the issues, which only happened once or so a YEAR, was to disconnect the 12 volts at the Chassis disconnect switch for about 30 seconds. After switching the 12 volts back on, the Actia dash computer would reset and be fine for a long time. You may want to try this the next time it happens. It costs nothing and may help eliminate other items.

DO you have your owner's manual?

There is a "Test procedure" specified. Forget what it is. but it's in there

It will give you (on all gauges) 3 different readings rotating .FULL MID and ZERO. Flash all lights. Sound all audio alarms. And so on.

Of course if there is a screw loose (Bad ground) or other bad connection. it might not show up on the self test.
  • Thanks guys. So you guys do not think it is a problem with the ground that is not grounded? I will look into the site you have me garymunson.
  • That RV having the Actia instrument panel I'm not sure if it uses the same stepper motors as Chevy, etc. panels. Stim mentioned his being a PU which doesn't have the same instrument panel. The Actias are know to be problematic. They are a computer, themselves. Had issues with mine intermittently resetting while going down the road. Quite a few places repair them.

  • If it has the GM gauges they used "Step Motors" (about 2" in diameter) for the gauges and during those years they would fail and be unreliable.
I had to replace the motors on my 2004 Chevy PU because most were going bad.
The improved 6 motors for my gauge panel cost $16.00 on ebay and I had to solder them in.
There are companies that repair them in the $2-300.00 range.
