Cummins 24 valve engine

We have a '98 holiday rambler endeavor with a cummins 24 valve Diesel engine with turbo. We just broke down and were told one of the turbos went outweigh is costing us about 4,000. The mechanic told us a new engine would run us 30-40 grand. This seems to be a lot. Anyone have any experience or know anything about engines?

Never seen one with more than one turbo unless super modified. Typo??? Or did he say that? We buy turbos for m11 and n14 cummins under $1000 reman or new. With labor i cant see $4000.
  • Definitely too much for the turbo and/or engine by itself, but I have to wonder how much of that price is labor. Does the mechanic have to do anything appalling to get the engine out in the first place? For example, to service the engine in my F450, the first step is "Remove the cab from the frame".
  • I just had to replace the Turbo, exhaust manifold, fuel punp and engine head @ 84K mi. The turbo part alone was about $1800.
  • But more people replace transmissions and engines sooner on gas motorhomes tan on diesels. Properly cared for the engine should last 500 k at least if not 1 million miles. Sure stuff can happen but I love my big oil burner. Power and torque on tap and a industrial generator that is rated at 30,000 hours. I have the ISM which is the smallest of the heavy duty engines and love that it turns 1350 RPMs as I am running down the road.

  • I thought the endeavor came with an 8.3 engine in that vintage not the 5.9 that is inthe pickups. I was looking at them a it later and they had a bigger engine. But searching on it I did see that it is a 5.9 engine. I would think that is cheaper than 30 - 40k. I just searched for a reman engine and it was just under 5 k with 1000 core.
  • X2 on finding another mechanic. I glanced at your previous posts. Is it Overheating again? When was the last time all the junk was washed out of radiator that is if you have rear radiator?

Ya, the valve of my 2001 p/u just went up. How about 1/2 price of what your mechanic said? And I'll drive it to you. 68,000 miles. OK joking, I couldn't part with her.
  • Well considering my 2001 dodge ram with the 24v HO cummins. 6spd manual 4x4 LB quad cab. was only $35,000 when new I'd say your mechanic is a bit off on his price for a new motor. Sorry can't offer any real help but it may be well worth your time to find another mechanic.
