cummins isx

Has anyone had a Cummins 650 ISX motor and would you get one again?
  • I had friends that had a 600 HP ISX in a '07 Monaco Signature. The motor sat too low in the cradle and was at risk for damage. My friends were pulling into the T/A station at Blue Diamond and the I-15 in Las Vegas and the coach bottomed out breaking the oil pan. Oil everywhere. It was a $5,000 repair.

While I had our coach in for Service at Cummins, the tech told me that Monaco squeezed that engine in the engine area and if anything were needing to be replaced, things had to be disassembled because it was so tight. At the time, we had a 425 HP Cummins ISL.... plenty of room to work on it. But, the HP in the ISX would be nice.

    MM.
  • I'm a retired over the road trucker and I've drove semi's in the past with the ISX motor and it's my second favorite motor that I've ever drove. Very responsive and I liked that!
  • Thank you for that info, its giving us a little reading material for sure.
  • Most Cummins engines are very robust. However, there are some reports of the ISX650 dropping valves. I know of one low mileage high end coach at Cummins Atlantic in Roanoke, Va that dropped a valve. There are some folks on IRV2.com who have reported dropped valve on the ISX. If you Google 'Cummins ISX 650 dropped valve' you will find several threads on the topic.

I am sure there are many of the ISX that have done fine so it may be a small number with this failure. However, it is just something you might want to investigate.
