Dallas/Fort Worth to Las Vegas

I am planning a trip from Dallas/Fort Worth to Las Vegas the first part of October. Would anyone be willing to share their personal experience of their trip as to suggestions on what to see along the way and good CGs to stop along the way. The duration of my trip will be about a week and half to two weeks. Thank you
  • May I suggest the Main St. Casino r.v. park

full hookups are 20.00 per day for a pull through...you will be close to Fremont st....but you can buy a bus pass to get you to the bright lights or you can rent a car at the Main St. casino. (all paved)
with a wall all around ..you are close to the freeway..keep that in mind.

I stayed there last Thanksgiving and enjoyed.. Fremont st. Mob museum
    it is old Las Vegas..

that KOA was about 60 a night
  • I would add Meteor Crater to one of the stops along the way. It is an interesting experience that cannot be appreciated with any film or pictures. It is just amazing that such a small meteor made such a large crater.

There is a great campground right along the highway at the junction that leads to the crater. The rates were very reasonable when we stayed there a few years ago.

And if you do make that stop, you MUST drive over to Winslow and have dinner at the Turquoise Room in the La Posada Hotel. It is a remarkable restaurant. (Why there is a restaurant of this quality in such an isolated area, is a mystery to me.) When you drive there you will feel like this is the worst advice you have ever had. The part of town where the La Posada is located is in serious need of renovation. But, once inside the hotel the world changes and you will realize you have discovered a really remarkable place. You will enjoy one of the best meals you have ever had.
  • The OP said nothing about information on the destination, but was requesting information about the trip and stops between the 2 locations.
  • With 3 long driving days to get there and 3 more to get back, will not leave a lot of time for side trips if you plan to spend many days in Las Vegas.

But. Palo Duro Canyon, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest NP, Grand Canyon NP, Lake Mead/Hoover Dam, "Standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona", are all relatively short side trips on the way worth the visit time permitting.
  • A show in Las Vegas that you should not miss is TERRY FATOR, the puppeteer. We have seen his show 3 times over the last couple of years, he is excellent. He is the guy that won the one million dollars on America's Got Talent. He is at the Mirage Casino.

We also have seen just about every Cirque show in LV. 'O' at the Bellagio is excellent as Mystere mentioned above. I was really impressed with the new Michael Jackson Cirque show, 'ONE', at Mandalay Bay.

Have fun, there will be lots to do in LV!

  • The bad news is that by the time to get to Vegas, the KOA at Circus Circus, the only RV park on the Strip, will be gone! It will be missed. It is due to close Sept. 30th!
As to your trip, assuming you are planning to head N and then 40W you should visit the OK City National Memorial. It was extremely well done and well worth the stop. You might be tempted to stop at the Big Texan in Amarillo as you will see lots of signs and hype. I, personally, did not find anything here that's any different than any other steakhouse based restaurant. You will be going through Albuquerque in October!!!! This is a big deal if you are able to time it to match up with the ABQ Balloon Fiesta. You are going to need a couple of days to take it all in but it is an absolute MUST SEE. Change your plans if you must, but do not drive past this one.
Now, once you get close to Flagstaff you will drive my Meteor Crater. This is a couple of hours side trip but a worthwhile stop. If your travels have you stopping in Flagstaff you should stay at the Black Bart RV park and then plan to eat dinner at their restaurant. The prime rib is some of the best and while you are eating the servers sign show tunes and they are pretty good. As you approach Vegas you have 2 options. The new(ish) Grand Canyon Skywalk is open but it's a bit of an out of the way side trip. If you think that would be of interest, do it on your way. Whether you do or you don't you can plan your trip to visit the Hoover Dam. You can stop on your way in or plan about a 35 mile trip from Vegas back to the Dam but either way, do plan to visit.
  • I am always in awe of how they can give away so much money at the casinos and still afford all those lights and buildings.
On a serious note, take in a cirque du Soleil show or two. I still feel the original Vegas show at the TI, Mystere, is the one to see if you are only going to see one. But they are all fantastic.
Las Vegas morphs on a continual basis, and right now they are pushing the entertainment, which is better than pushing the "family" vacation as they did a few years ago. Personally, I miss when they pushed the gambling and if you were gambling, everything else was at your beckon call. Just be aware that the prices of yesteryear no longer exist. Rooms now cost, food now costs and everything else costs, unless you are a big player. The $2.99 buffet and $19.00 room are all but extinct.
  • Depends entirely on how much time you want to spend in Las Vegas. There's about a ton of stuff to see and do between D/FW and your destination, more than enough to fill the whole of your trip several times over, especially if you get off the interstate.

    :)
