Dallas/Fort Worth best route south this year.

From another one of my posts it sounds like Fort Worth I35w is still a mess. I need to make time this year an am forced into coming mostly straight south down I35 and making it to the Waco area somehow.

Thinking my best bet is to get to Plano (NE Dallas) and taking the east I635 outside loop then back to I35 . Hoping to avoid as much driving stress as possible.

What do think? or is there a better route.
  • I live in far east Plano (Murphy) and over Thanksgiving week did my trip to Corpus. Took US75 straight thru downtown Dallas and picked up I35E then on into Waco, Austin, San Antonio and on into Corpus. Did it last Sunday and reversed the route coming back on Thanksgiving Day. A little construction in S Dallas on 35E but other than that it was pretty clear sailing. Oh, there was also construction on i-410 in San Antonio.
  • Thanks JustaGuy.

Thinking now I'm going to drift to the east of Dallas and take the country roads. That's what I enjoy, so might as well give it a go and hope I don't lose too much time.

Hit Paris,TX and take hwy19 south. Then turn on hwy79 and drift west.

Thanks for all of the input.
  • Hmmmm....well you can do that but you have to take I-35E South out of Denton. You will then run into the Lake Lewisville bridge construction. I-35W South construction is bad. However, you can avoid this by getting past it by being thru the construction by 5am weekdays or by 7am on Sunday. Hit it any other time (on both routes) and it sucks..
  • Thanks BB_TX, maybe I'll go back to plan A then. If it works, I'll owe you a beverage.
  • I don't think you will gain anything by going thru Dallas. There is construction on I-35E also. Taking I-635 around the east side of Dallas and back to I-35E would be about a 15 mile or so detour thru an area noted for heavy traffic. Then you would get back on I-35E heading south just in time to hit the new construction area started around Waxahachie.

I would just stay on I-35W and bear with the few miles of construction, doing it mid day or weekend to minimize traffic. Unless you were unfortunate enough to encounter a major accident, you would be thru the DFW area and on your way south well before you could do any bypass.

Don't know your starting point, but from OKC you could take I-44 to Wichita Falls, then US 281 down to US 84 over to Waco. Much less traffic, but don't know it would be any faster as you would have small towns, traffic lights, and lower speed limits.
