dash a/c repair on a DP

Where would the best place be for dash air issues on an older diesel pusher? I have had the system checked three years ago and it had a fitting that leaked refrigerant out. They tightened the fitting and refilled system.

It was fine for about 6 months, then not cold again. had coach in Caterpillar for another issue and they told me that a hose to compressor was leaking.

Should I take it to Cat(5 minutes away from me)...to an RV service place...or find an A/C only type garage to check system out.....?

    Well Sir,
There's two schools of thought here. One, CAT told you it was a hose that is leaking and therefore, causing your problem. If that's the case, and they know which one is the problem, then, did you get an estimate from them, as to the cost of the repair, from CAT?

Second, I would suspect that, you're not the only one that's ever had an A/C problem diagnosed by those CAT techs. I also suspect that, many of them are A/C certified and have done A/C work before, maybe many times. There's lots of over the road trucks, off road equipment, and more with CAT engines in them that still need A/C work done now and then.

I'd maybe ask the service advisor at the CAT facility about his/her establishment doing A/C repairs and, would he/she recommend taking it to another facility for that work to be done. Especially since it's so close to you.

And three, some times, convenience is the name of the game in certain circumstances. Especially if traffic, time elements, a ride back from taking the coach there and getting another one to take you back to the repair center to pick it up etc.

Now, just how well of a job the CAT folks would do for you on your A/C, who knows? Most repairs are guaranteed for a certain time and or mileage time frame.

On the other hand, the other posters here have a valid point in advising you to go to a repair center that may SPECIALIZE in A/C repairs.
  • Take to a shop that fixes automotive AC. After all, it is just a larger system, parts are the same.
  • I would take to an RV AC place. We had the AC compressor replaced in 2006 by one RV outfit. They apparently did not properly evacuate the system, and Country Coach had to replace the compressor again in 2012. It's been working fine since.
