That is exactly right. I hook mine up to the 12 volt outlet on my dash and use a 64Gig SD card. This will give me 8 hours of recording at 1080. If I were recording traffic in front of me in case of an accident, 720 is more than sufficient for excellent video quality and that will extend your recording time, with a 64 Gig SD to 15-16 hours.
