Dealer Extended Warranty: Worth it?

The saga continues, but we're close to buying our first coach. We found an 09 Fleetwood Excursion 40x. It has every we need: right number of seat belts, 360HP cummins with 1000 ft lbs of torque, the mrs. likes the floor plan (yay) and so on.

Coach has 11k miles on it. Dealer offered a 4yr warranty for close to 4,000 covers everything but the powertrain for $100 deductible.

I'm averse to extended warranties, but it would be good to not have to stress any repairs for a few years.

Couple of questions:

1. Are these warranties worth it or should we buy aftermarket? If so, who sells these kinds of warranties?

2. Are these types of warranties voided if you're fulltiming?

  • The dealer for my new Discovery wanted $19k then 14k for a 5 year warranty. NO. Then they went to 9k and 6 years. NO. Finally had to cancel it at final signing. Major expensive parts (ie. chassis) are already covered for 5 years.
I got 2k back from a prior warranty I regretted buying and never used. I'm now saving up $3-400 per month just in case. In a 1 and 3/4 years I will have $10k.
If I never use it I'm ahead. I can fix most things myself. If I do need the money won't $10k cover it?
My rear camera went out. Sent it back to mfgr. for $10 USPS.
If I had to take the RV to a Fleetwood dealer it would have cost me $80+ for fuel and 2 days in trips. More savings by not having an extended warranty.
  • a previous post "assumed" you were paying cash or had an extra $4,000 to stick in the bank. would it be better to pay that $4,000 more down to reduce payments? If you have that much extra/available cash, do you really need a warranty? how much a month will buying a warranty AT A Fair price??? cost, $15-$20? as said before, buy that $4,000 warranty for $2,000.

  • Are the tires new? At 6 years they are getting close to replacement. $3000 or so could be spent real soon on that alone, which isn't covered by a warranty.
  • I bought a new 97 Bounder and the dealer 'wanted' $4200 for a 5 year extended warranty for the coach when we first went in and put down a down payment. I told them no. When the coach arrived a few months later (it took a while to sell our class C, part of the deal to buy this one) they offered the same warranty for about $3000. I told them we did not need a full 50,000 miles, but 36,000 would be fine, and got 6 year for only about $2,750.

There is a lot of mark-up in the warranty that is given to the stealership, so they can come down in price a bit. Also depending on the mileage that you think you might travel, you can usually get a better price. You can also take time to research a extended warranty online, and compare prices that way. I keep getting offers in the mail for extending my car warranty too, so I imagine there are a lot of companies with the program. Just the one that the dealership sells will be financed through the RV loan, probably at 7% interest or less, and only add about $15 to the monthly payment.

So what happened? I was worried about the powerful V8 460" motor tearing up the transmission, and had heard stories about the diesel trucks needing stronger transmissions in 93-96. I would have the same transmission. The transmission never gave me any problems, and I changed the fluid at 20,000 miles, and have a external transmission oil filter.

What I did spend money on was a passenger side oil lead from the rear differential seal (that would have been a $850 repair) and several leaks in the hydraulic jacks (that would have been replaced at $850 each X about 6 times).

I also needed a new toilet seal, and they replaced the whole toilet, it takes less time. There where a couple of other things, but most tiny items I just fixed myself.

So I guess that I saved more than $2,700.

If they are not covering anything on the engine or transmission, what are they covering for $4,000? Just the jacks, refrigerator, air conditioners, and other small things? Their total value might reach $4,000 if you did have to buy each of them. ..

I would talk them down in price. See what they can cover for the extended warranty for the engine or transmission?

Google car extended warranty. You might find dozens of replies. .

Good luck with your new purchase!

I hope that you are getting the RV for close to low bluebook, unless it is in really excellent condition! Yes they add $2,000 to the value of the bluebook because it only has about 11,000 miles on it. They would deduct $2,000 if it had more than say 75,000 miles on it.

    Good luck,

    Fred.

I would put the $4000 in the bank just in case. Do your do diligence and or have a qualified inspector help you look over your new coach before you give them the check. They fix things a lot better before you give them your money.
