Didn't think fixing Class A was so DIFFICULT!!

1994 Winnebago Adventurer, Chevy Chassis - bought mid-May 2013.

We are coming up on 2 months with a broke down Class A, longer than we owned. Most of my summer is now wasted.

End of June - husband went to dump RV. He stopped to find location. RV would start but not turn over. Towed home as every place was closed.

Husband replaced fuel pump but still will not turn over.

2 Mobile Techs - Scheduled appointment - no show.

Other Mobile Tech - Didn't appear professional - spent two hours on RV and said maybe ECM and replace. We must order. Waste of $200!!

Order ECM - still will not turn over. Think we found fuel pump relay and replaced - dash, plug in like part. Will not start!!

I am so tired of spending money getting no answers!! Thoughts, suggestions?? Husband is mechanical but not expert on RV. Local truck/RV dealership is expensive and not to mention tow fee!

Thank you!

  • To reiterate what Dennis said, WELCOME TO THE FORUM LEAH.

I could have worded that differently as well, we don't want to run you off as we really do want to help and make your RV experience a pleasant one.

If you could provide as much information about the chassis and the issue at hand as Dennis stated it would be very helpful to assist in diagnosing.

  • Leah, First off WELCOME TO THE FORUM.

Now for the business at hand. When you say the coach starts but won't turn over, I am assuming you mean the engine cranks but won't start. Is that correct?

Second question: You have a Chevy chassis, so I am assuming you have the 454 Chevy engine also. Is that correct?

As Zmotorsports pointed out, oftentimes it's more difficult to explain WHAT is happening than it is to fix it. To get the best answers, provide as much information as possible. You told us your coach, but since the problem is in the engine, provide as much info on the drive train. My guess is it's a simple fix as the coach was running fine until you stopped to empty the tanks.

Again, guessing here but I would look for a bad ground somewhere on the coach. Does the radio work? Let us know.

Finally, if all else fails, take a look at the link provided below. It may help you find a reliable mechanic in the Kansas City area...these beasts are intimidating, but their drive trains are not much different than the cars we drive.....Dennis

  • Yeah, I'm confused. If it won't turn over, why did you replace the fuel pump? That won't cause it not to turn over. Not turning over is a problem like dead battery, bad wiring, bad starter, bad solenoid, or something along those lines.
  • Can't just keep replacing parts hoping to change the correct one. That gets very expensive very fast. Before continuing it needs to be determined whether the issue is fuel or ignition related.

It is a bit confusing when you state it starts but won't turn over. Part of the issue could possibly be in the explanation you or your husband are giving to the mechanics. I find that extracting the correct information or description from people about an issue is usually sometimes more difficult than the repair itself.

  • Check the oil pressure switch. The fuel pump relay only closes to start the engine, when the oil pressure builds the relay is turned off. The oil pressure switch controls the pump from that point on. If you loose oil pressure the fuel pump shuts off.
