Diesel Motorhome

if I can talk my wife into it, I think I might buy a nice used diesel and getting rid of our 1990 34' MH. I've been following a thread talking about the diesels having better quality cabinets and other things. One thing I notice is cabinets since I'm a ex cabinet maker and many cabinets I see are pure junk except the doors and they are just ok. What do you guys think of this Newmar and it's price? http://www.ebay.com/itm/2002-Newmar-Mountain-Aire-4064-Class-A-Motorhome-35000-Miles-/221476644163?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3391096543&item=221476644163&pt=RVs_Campers

  • Just so all know, cabinets are not the only thing on my list, bathroom layout and counter space for my wife is important. A hide a bed rather than a jack knife sofa is a must with a dinette booth if at all possible, but I can make another of that if I have too.

I completely agree with you, 65K is a lot of money to me. I would have to see everything working properly and the tires have to be near new for me to pay that kind of dollars. I am swaying to the Newmars for their quality at that price range. I of course do know that nothing I can afford is going to be like the Prevost, Newell types.
  • Newmar builds some very nice motorhomes as well as some entry level rigs. You can refer to the original list price as an indication as to the quality of the components, including the cabinets.

As a rule of the thumb, diesels cost more and usually have better components, but not always. Some gas rigs have been very well made and with better quality cabinets. Some diesels are entry level with inexpensive cabinets. (I previously owned a Holiday Rambler Imperial Class C that had very well made cabinets as well as being very well made overall. I've had friends that had Holiday Rambler Vacationers (diesel) and were disappointed with the inexpensive cabinets.)

well I havent seen very, of what I would call good quality cabinets in 150K gas coaches. The doors and drawer fronts are solid wood but the face frame usually are mdf covered in matching woodgrain vinyl. The end panels and wall panels are usually 1/8" luan with the same vinyl covering. My wife and I looked a couple of weeks ago at a new diesel pusher at Camping World (unknown brand to me), the price was in the 220K range and that had the same type of cheap woodworking, even the rosettes at the top of the trim on the slideout was not even real wood, just toned with stain to match color. My point is that I would think you would get solid wood cabinets void of particle board and mdf for 220K, no matter if it were gas or diesel.
  • If you're looking for cabinet quality try the Beaver line of coaches. Particularly the Marquis.
