Diesel Pushers, Do The New Ones Smell?

Be cautious of the generator, as another poster mentioned. Many diesel pushers have diesel gennys up front. When running, their exhaust can be noticed outside, so you'll want the windows shut.

My question is in regards to the fumes/pollution coming out the diesel engine exhaust pipe which makes that familiar smell. I don't smell the fumes on the newest smaller diesels and so it does not bother me or my wife. I also believe they don't trigger my sis-in-law's asthma.

My engine is so efficient and clean that I've heard that in many cities, the air coming out of the exhaust is cleaner than the air going into the engine. It's a near zero emission vehicle. I wish I could back up that statement with a great authoritative link but I couldn't find one. In the meantime, click here for some insights.

The straight answer to the somewhat vague question is yes, diesel coaches smell like diesel coaches. They smell less than they used to but the odor is quite distinct and recognizable as diesel exhaust. I also find propane and gasoline to have distinct smells but I doubt it's the smell that triggers and asthmatic response but more likely that particulate matter in diesel exhaust which has been dramatically reduced in recent years.

Most new MH's should have the clean burning technologies. But, if you have a diesel generator it won't have that, and if running can be smelled?

All diesel motorhomes being currently built are to EPA 2010 standards. These are clean running engines with little or no particulates (that is what is triggering your sister-in-laws asthma) or NOx (that's what DEF is for). They have very little exhaust odor as a result of these pollution controls.

The main push to these clean diesels was in fact the impact on repiratory diseases caused by "dirty" diesel engines on millions of people - both here and in Europe where diesel engines are far more popular.

I do notice newer diesel pickup trucks and such in general are better with fumes, but not sure if the laws apply to DP motor homes.

A standard gas powered class A is surely a reasonable solution, but my brother (as do I) likes the idea of a pusher for the increased basement storage along with the entry door in front of passenger seat.

I recall gas pushers were made for a few years but they were horrible with fuel economy. An updated 28-30 foot gas pusher would be inviting for them.

Does any manufacture offer a short GP today?

Any newer ones are hardly noticeable. Have you noticed any newer pickups smelling? Not likely.
