Diesel Stoves, etc

We have a Dynamax and it has a elec. stove. Many motorhomes are going all elec.
to get rid of the propane.

I don't think I would shy away from it. I love the expedition style and that might be my next one actually. It is vented outside so it should be fine. I would go and see one and run it. Then make up your own mind. I agree with the others that older units on boats did stink.

I hear what you are saying Charlie. If the OP is a hardcore boondocker, I can see some benefit. For a campground and getaway user that just doesn't want to deal with propane, not so much.

My Onan pulls from my main tank and the pickup is above 1/4 tank. I would really like to add a 2000i and then I would have very flexible and fuel efficient power options. Even the 2000i could operate induction cookers, electric heater, etc. Only A/C would really need the big boy.

I think boat forums would be really good to look at, since they have very specific reasons for wanting to be all diesel and would be most experienced in the +/- discussions.

The warm cycle isn't 30 min - more like 5-10 min.
The whole point of a Webasto X100 is to get away from propane: hard to get in some parts of the world and/or hard to fill tanks due to a multitude of different fittings. Also a backup heat source.
As far as induction, one needs a very large battery bank, lots of solar panels and/or a heavy duty battery-battery charger.

Seems like the nutshell answer is that if you don't mind a 30 minute heat up cycle before you can use the stove, then they can be OK.

Everything I read says I would stick with propane or induction.

I think that one Expedition vehicle had a vented diesel stove. They had hydronic hot water coils to warm the vehicle, and diesel boiler to warm the coolant if the engine was off.

By using the standard rear 40 gallon tank, and a forward 60 gallon tank (F-550 chassis) they could run the truck for a month or more without refueling. It also had a large inverter, pair of solar panels on the roof, dual 130 amp alternators. This would even power the air conditioner too.

One good thing about a Webasto type diesel stove (in addition to doing away with propane) is that it vents to the outside and therefore can be used a back up heat source.

when they were in Halifax on a shake down cruise. She was not a fan of the diesel stove in their Unimog GXV extreme earth type roamer RV. I didn't ask for details, but if I remember correctly it had something to do with the way it heated up and cooled. It might be more that it was time consuming? I think they went all diesel because in some places diesel was available and propane would not be.

I used to be an avid sailor and can well remember foul diesel smells. I don't know if that translates to RV's. It sure would be nice to have a single fuel source.

I see Tiger uses Webasto diesel space heating units, the cooker is probably a Webasto unit as well. Webasto diesel cooker It appears the combustion unit is sealed from the rv interior and vented outside, like a Webasto Air Top or hydronic engine or space heater.

I haven't figured out the diesel fridge...:)

On the Tiger site it says it uses a Nova Kool 2-Way Compressor Fridge w/ Separate Freezer. Tiger does not give the size.
