dingy towing

We are told that a 2013 Malibu with auto tranny can be towed 4-down. I look on the 2013 Dingy tow guide and Malibu is not listed. The dealer checked and was told it can be towed. What is the real deal, and who should I believe?
  • The Owner's Manual that comes with the car should tell you how to tow the car. It will be specific not to avoid the warranty.

Just found this in the Owner's Manual, pg 10-93.

    Notice: If the vehicle is
    towed with all four wheels
    on the ground, the drivetrain
    components could be damaged.
The repairs would not be covered
by the vehicle warranty. Do not
tow the vehicle with all four
    wheels on the ground.

    Hope this helps, Steve
  • We have a 13 Malibu, I haven't looked but I'm pretty sure it cannot be towed 4 down. It has the same 6 spd trans as the Cruze and some Fords which cannot be towed 4 down. We kept out 07 Malibu as a toad when we bought the new one. The 07 has a 4 spd auto and can be towed 4 down.

Here's another post on the subject.

  • I have a 2013 Malibu and called factory to see if it could be towed on a two wheel dolly. Yes to dolly, not four down. We found a great used dolly for $700. Simple to hook up and pulls great. Sold our fifth wheel a year ago to buy our first motor home and love having our car to drive around once we reach our destination.
  • Like said above, check the owners manual. However...with one or two Chevy models, even that might not be enough.
I remember here on the Forum, something about a mid-year change of transmissions...the car went from towable to not towable (4-down) and several trannys "blew up"...however, GM supposily made good on this.
Research that here on the Forum.

I personally tow a 2007 Chevy HHR auto, and a 2011 Ford Ranger 4WD auto with no problems. The HHR, pull a fuse. The Ranger needed a "transfer case disconnect kit". (Strange, how Ford 2WD automatics are NOT towable 4 down at all.)
  • The point to remember is that the dealer/salesman will not know about RV towing. Read the Dingy tow guides, owners manual, then call the factory..
  • CRUZE is not towable with auto,5 speed cruze is if you pull 4 fuses...Chevy Sonic Auto WITH 1.8L engine only is towable 4 down with one fuse to pull and I put a switch in. Chevy Spark is NOT towable 4 down even with stick (55 mph limit is not sustainable)...Malibu is not towable 4 down...
