DIY oil change - questions

Where are you guys finding a pan big enough for 5 gal of oil? I have a funmover 39c with the c7 engine. Want to do these things at home as much as possible. Tired of finding errors or things missed by service personnel and have the time. Also want to change my own fuel filters, in the belief I can keep it cleaner than the average mechanic will take care to do.

Thanks for any suggestions on a large pan.

  • Dump to valve looks like a god idea, but the slow flow I have concerns about, not washing out the sediments/sludge fast enough. Like the faster mop deal, with a large trash bag, not much to the clean up!
  • There are numerous types of drain pans available from the commercial vehicle parts houses. Most have built in pour spouts for transferring your used oil to smaller containers for disposal.

NAPA may be a good source, but you don't usually find them at Wal-Mart.

How about putting on Fumoto valve, that way you can use smaller containers for ease of use and transport and be able to shut off the flow while switching containers. Looks like the T-204 will fit .. go with the N suffix ( hose nipple) , makes it a lot cleaner.
Here's the website I use them on my vehicles and have never had a problem
  • This helps out a awful lot:

It may not be a fast flow, but it really makes the job much easier!!! And I drain into a big rubber pan that I picked up at Tractor Supply.
  • I used a castered mop bucket from one of the big box stores. Most of the oil in to it and then roll it out of the way as you slide a normal drain pan for the last few gallons. The mop bucket will hold all of the oil but is easier to move when it is 2/3rds full.
