Do you carry fire wood in a storage bin?

I was visiting a friend that was in town staying at a local CG. His neighbor was unloading fire wood from one of the storage bins of his Class A. Maybe it's just me, but living in Florida I'd be afraid of termites. Anyone else do this?

  • first time trying to post a pic hopefully it works I made this propane fire pit for about 50 bucks throw a little wood chips on like you buy for a smoker and you got the smell of wood
  • seeing some of the prices you have to pay on the above posts, I am happy to say that $10 bought a lot of fire wood for us last weekend here in Oregon I would say an eighth of a rick
  • Maryland state parks typically charge $4 for a milk crates worth. Usually not very dry so it doesn't burn very well. Due to the emerald ash borer they dont allow wood from out of the county, let alone another state. Usually lumber is ok because it has been through some sort of process and is very unlikely to bring any type of pest, fungal or insect, with it.
  • More and more I see local wood only due to pests. If you look at the higher elevations of the Smokies you will see what a beetle can do to a forest.

Unfortunately, I've seen campgrounds charge $7 for 4-5 pieces of extremely dry wood that burns in 30 minutes. I try to find firewood from a local grocery store or other source if I'm going to be more than a night. If it's $5 for a bundle large enough for one night, I buy from the campground. I give leftovers to neighbors when I leave to not transport the wood out of the area.
  • Most campgrounds we've stayed at sell a bundle of firewood for $5 so for me it's not worth the effort to haul it around. Like gbopp said, most campgrounds don't want plant disease and bugs foreign to their area brought in so I just follow the rules.
  • It's my understanding that a lot of places do not allow outside firewood, because of bugs, etc..

I do carry scraps of 2x lumber for starting fires. I usually buy the firewood near where we stay.
  • My adult kids enjoy a family fire when the families head out camping together. On these trips we often load up a basket (big basket) with firewood and stuff it in the bay. The wood is either used or offered to others when we leave. Personally, if we are with a small group, I'd just as soon purchase a bundle of wood at the office. No, termites are not really a big problem at my base, but I wouldn't use the rig for long term storage.
